Hey i recently moved to Wollongong and looking for a good boxing gym/trainer in Wollongong, can anyone who knows the area shed some light? Apart from the PCYC the majority seem to be kickboxing or MMA focused. Anyways if anyone has any info for let me know. Cheers.
Welcome to ESB mate :good......dont know about gyms in the gong but someone on here will. I like Wollongong....nice beaches and great feedbag houses on the water.
Cheers mate, yeah it's a good spot down here. Funnily though i live in the cbd and there are 3 martial arts gym's (PMA, reflex and shidoshi) within a 5 minute walk from my house and only one boxing gym (PCYC) Though all the martial arts gym's say they do boxing too. Looking for somewhere with a good trainer and is open 5 or 6 day's a week.
Mate, Crokers Gym. trainer Vito Gaudiosi (Ex OZ Middleweight champ) It's located beside the Dandaloo pub just off the freeway on Kanahooka rd. Drive into the pub carpark. Gym is at the end of the soccer field. One of the most under rated trainers in the country & a wiz in the corner. (& @ 40+ he's probably the fittest bloke in his gym) :good:good:good
Im pretty serious, though only beginning. In saying this im looking to train 5-6 day's a week, iv'e trained for boxing in the past and know it's not easy. I would like to fight ameteurs around August (if the trainer feels im ready of course) and go from there. The gym iv'e been into down here has too many people just ****ing around and taking up space, and due to number of people, the serious ones don't get much guidance at all. Looking for somewhere as close to CBD as possible as i don't have a car atm
from memory there was one upstairs at the intersection of corrimal and crown st. i remember there was one on burreli st too but i think thats closed down. also bulli pcyc is worth a try. its only 10 minutes on the train
The one on Burelli would be Blaster's, it's long gone. The other one you mentioned is Shidoshi, that's a kickboxing/mauy thai gym, though i heard they do boxing, ill check it out. The other one on crown is PMA, which is more MMA/BJJ focus, though they also say they do boxing, but also they are only open mon/wed/fri. I think i will just stick it out wth the PCYC and see how i go.
Mate Lee Carr used to train Shannan Taylor at Shidoshi's but there mostly focuse on MMA now, The PCYC would be the go, only downside is Taylor trains there and unless u kiss the ground he walks on, its awkward to train there. Another good trainer there is at Figtree by the name of Chris Davies, he trains Nathan Wright who is the NSW 60kg champion. Both are great guys. Besides that Vito's and Lake Illawarra PCYC also do a bit of Boxing. You'l find out in time just how loved Shannan is in the town.
I'm 86kg atm, but would fight at light heavy 81kg. No drama's dropping a few kg's was down to 79kg this time last year. haha yeah i know about Taylor mate haha seen him in there sparrin a bit n that. It don't bother me mate. I'm aiming to fight first ameteur round august, gonna be in the gym 3x week and doing conditioning and a little bag/shadow work 3 day's a week. Hopefully gonna find a training partner to train with on day's gym isn't open, the more padwork the better. Anyone have any advice for me?
Nah I've started mate, and my fitness is above average for a regular joe, but no where near fighting fit. I've got a good work ethic though, 3.5 months will be enough fitness wise, hopefully I'll be ready skill wise and mentally. But like i said, if it comes end of August and I'm not ready, i won't force it. Starting sparring this week, hopefully be in the 3 day's a week from this coming Friday in.
