Just read that Patrick Day was in a coma.
I started watching boxing 10 years ago and really have to say that the sport is at its absolut peak right now.
almost every fight i watch ends either by ko or their is at least a knockdown.
The talent pool is so big with all those talents from eastern europe, central asia and latin america.
I am sure that the sport will undergo some mayor changes if those head injuries keep happening.

This is nothing new but sad each and every time it happens.

All that has to be done is to lessen the amount of rounds on average. Set a precedent by lowering the amount of rounds in championship fights and the rest will coincide. A combination of exhaustion and weight cutting tend to be strong factors in these injuries when they happen.

Back in the day they fought 15 rounds every month with horse hair gloves, twice as many punches thrown and fought hours after weighing in... No comparison to these jokers.

It could be that we just have have a ton of fights around the world now and also (thanks to the internet) almost instant news. So, when a fighter (one in a thousand) gets seriously injured it looks like the boxing is at its peak.

What could be done to make weight cutting less a dangerous? The size disparity between two guys ostensibly in the same weight class can be huge.

The science of weight cutting has progressed but is it leaving fighters in a weakened condition during the bout?

I'm not sure. Just asking your opinion.

Yeah that could be. But i think 10 years ago news about stuff like that were also spread around the internet and i dont recall stuff like that happening so frequently.

Forgot to add that in the aftermath of this fight:

    This report was published:

'There was much disquiet in the aftermath of last week's fight at the New Orleans Olympic Club. Gentlemen frequenting the popular 'ESB Club' were heard to condemn in the most vituperative fashion the actions of the referee, John Duffy. One member opined that a mere 110 rounds rounds was insufficient time to make a judgement on whether the fight should be stopped and worried that Mr Duffy was acting in the same irresponsible manner as certain refeees across the Atlantic have recently been observed in what's become known as a 'British stoppage'.

It almost certainly reduces the meningeal protection of your brain as that is a largely fluid based substance. It'd take a while to rehydrate as it is plasma like and absorbs not too quickly. Obviously the gut cavity lacks protection too as there's such a drop in water protection so overall it isn't healthy. Some might tolerate it better than others but it should be eliminated. Same day weigh ins, perhaps only within an hour of the event would do a lot to reduce this.

Let's not forget the horse hair gloves were also 5 ounces. People underrated the toughness of past fighters. They fought weeks or even days apart instead of months most of the time and they fought hard and long bouts.

Quite right, dear sir. Take for example, this sissy fight. Nowadays they'd have let it go on, I believe?

Edit: near the end of the clip comes a bit where the people of Willard's day called him "a quitter" after not going on with a multiply-fractured face and six missing teeth. How old is ESB, anyway?

That's precisely why they eliminated same day weigh ins - to allow for rehydration.
