Apparently he was a light heavyweight golden gloves champ.

Not that it makes any difference. You don't magically become an expert boxing historian as soon as you lace up some gloves.

At least, Tony Triem rates Ali higher than the Klitschkos & Lennox Lewis, which don't belong in his all-time top ten.

There are also other historians alongside Mr. Triem who say that in a fight over 15 rounds James Jeffries, Jack Johnson & Joe Louis most likely would have cleaned up the canvas with the Klitschko brothers.

And that the last two decades are the leanest period in Heavyweight history so far, without really outstanding champions, I think this is the naked truth...

I agree here. Most boxing writers/historians never laced up gloves themselves and that doesn't matter at all. That's the equivalent of not trusting a cancer specialist to treat you when he never had cancer himself.

You don't need to have gone down that road to know what you're talking about, although it's pretty clear that Ali wasn't a bum in any sense of the word.
He is a bit overrated in history imo and got a couple of clear gifts too, but he clearly is one of the greats.

I wouldn't call Ali a "bum", but I agree with most the other statements that guy Tony Triem made in that video.

People who know boxing history can see the truth in what he's saying.

He is an intelligent and articulate historian who is entitled to his own opinion.

I agree; Ali was not a bum. I also agree Ali is overrated pound for pound; there have been better all round fighters. The one point I agree with the guy on is the self proclaimed stuff and the whole industry around Ali; he seems beyond criticism at times.

That said, he is usually ranked at least top 5 at Heavyweight and rightly so in my opinion.

Somehow I don't see Triem filling in the vacant old-timers' consultancy slot on HBO documentaries or role as de facto recognizable iconic historian left by Sugar. His brand of cantankerousness isn't quite as "cuddly", and the several missing bottom teeth and uncombed wispy goose-down Brian Setzer 'do aren't quite as TV-friendly a trademark image as the fedora and stogie.
