Im gonna be the guy to spark some controversy you got any takes that anyone beside you would think are absurd? Keep in mind this is not a thread to spout random opinions, im looking for educated takes which can be explained and debated upon. As for my own, Liston would’ve clobbered Ali had his shoulder not been injured. Edit: some proof he was injured as to not be a hypocrite https://www.newspapers.com/article/the-irving-daily-news-texan/103574716/ ENJOY THE MAYHEM BELOW!
All these modern day boxers are lying about their height and you suckers just keep on falling for it https://imgur.com/bPNrMp9 Remember when this guy was 6'2? Did he shrink?
Louis beats him to the punch everytime and just absolutely destroys him within 6. His defense was too poor to deal w a power puncher of his speed and accuracy. Lyle and Ali showed he could be a hit w a good 1/2 down the middle. Heck Ali disrespected his defense so much so he would throw lead rights. Louis was a better finisher than both those men he was also more accurate and just as fast as Ali at their best (at least close). George blocked the hook well but had no answer for down the middle shots. Making Joe his worst nightmare.
Sonny Liston would lose to most quick footed boxers with great stamina. Even at his peak, Ali, Charles, Walcott, Conn and Tunney would take him. At worst they'd lose a decision. Liston has almost no ko wins over any credible quick boxers. The only one he has is his knockout over Marty Marshall whom he knocked out only once in 3 fights. Burt Whitehurst, Machen and Ali all fought Liston, two of them twice and didn't get knocked out. That's one knockout victory in 8 fights against quick fighters. Marshall and Whitehurst were unranked. Somehow I'm expected to believe he'd crush Walcott and the rest of the guys before him despite not being able to "crush" guys not even remotely in Walcott's ballpark.
Ali is overrated both H2H and Pound 4 Pound. Greatest heavyweight sure but he's not better then those who fought and achieved success in multiple weight divisions. Also heavyweights in general are overrated Pound 4 Pound, on a technical level they're much worse then boxers fighting in a lighter division and usually their competition is way worse.
It may have lasted until the latter stages of the fight but I see Clay,as was then, still beating Liston. Ali was just too young, fit and skilful for Sonny.
He literally abused floyd “the rabbit” patterson who was known for his agility and endurance and got him the championship spot. Ali himself at a time had himself ranked below patterson in speed. Ur just wrong on this.
I completely disagree, let me ask you this. Had Ali not abused the loose ropes against Foreman and took majority of those shots to the face would he have won? I think any sensible person would say yes.(just woke up sorry if u saw the misinput) this fight would be just like that except Liston had a MUCH faster and stronger jab and also was arguably stronger than foreman.
Everyone keeps confusing me, when you say Spinks your not refering to the dude who lose to Tyson right? The guy who was shitting himself while entering the ring?
The way Patterson utilized his speed is not comparable to how Ali, Machen and Whitehurst did. Their styles were more oriented around lateral movement which Liston clearly had difficulty stopping. Floyd even admitted this when recollecting about the Liston fights and discussing a potential third one in the late 60s, implying he planned on using his feet much more. You can’t compare how Patterson used his speed against Liston to how Ali, Machen and Whitehurst did, even by Patterson’s own admission he fought a dumb fight.
