Why is it that this country doesn't produce boxers? Is the sport not very popular in Brazil? Is MMA their national sport now (besides soccer)?

Eder Jofre is the only Brazilian boxer I'm familiar with.

    Never heard of Freitas?

Anyway, the people that would take up boxing are mostly malnourished, which is a slight problem when taking shots to the head.

why does this country not produce more boxers?

maybe boxing isn't popular over there and their trainers suck?

    fuking no-brainer, seriously.

IMO they are into MMA. They lare more into rolling over in the ring just like their hero Gracie, than beating their opponent to the punch, like Jofre.

...or they become trannies and plastic surgeons, or drug dealers.

    here has several fighters,
but do not have necessary equipment and good instructors.
the fighters come out of Brazil and are beaten out of him.
and now with the growth of MMA, many are going for it.

    he has decent boxing skills.
but look what happened to him in his first fight outside of Brazil, he was knocked out.
but he's Brazilian hope in boxing, best coach and train just outside of Brazil. it will improve.

It's like any country, there must be a huge amount of untapped talent.
But boxing is cultural. Unless there is a decent gym in the area boxing will not take root, despite however much potential ability the local kids might have.

I have always thought this too. Brazilians are usually freaks of natures athetically so you would think boxing would be a good way to go specially with a country doing so bad economically.

Just does not make sense. But i guess soccer is also an easier way for them to get out of poverty and you dont take as much punishment.

I think it's just that they are really into MMA. I bet the Gracies are national heros. Nothing wrong with it... it's probably just their preference.

I'll go with boxing every time though.

    I think it's this ^

I think that's the case for most places around the world. There are lots of journey men and hometown favorites, but not too many contenders around the world. Most of the international fighters from poorer countries find a way to the US, Canada or Europe before they become contenders. Ex: Pacquiao

The US has better equipment, better training methods, better nutrition. It's amazing any time you see a fighter from a poorer country make it to the top.
