just took a peek at boxrec. there still are a lot more american HWs, than combined euro HWs. We have the Haye vs Wlad fight today, arguably the biggest fight in europe ever, and I barely seen any hype. I saw one commercial and a radio anouncement yesterday. that's it. europeans are still not very enthusiastic about fighting, aside from a select few. Was wondering, will boxing in europe ever be as popular as boxing in america?:think
Probably not in America, European boxing is just as popular in every other of the 190 odd countries in the world.
Eh? Where are you based? The hype in Britain has been huge, anyone with an interest in any sport would know about this fight. It's not at a Bruno Tyson/ Hatton Floyd level but not too far behing the latter. I'd wager Euro fighters get better live attendances than US equivalents. 50000+ tomorrow and 1mill plus ppv, seems huge to me.
No, if people had the same mentality about a title fight like they did in the 30's or 40's boxing would be better. Nowadays, with so many champions, and titles, because of so many governing organizations, it's so difficult to tell who the "man" is. Back then, you knew that Joe Louis was the heavyweight champ. You knew Henry Armstrong was the welterweight champ. And you knew Sugar Ray Robinson was the middleweight champ. People clamored around radio's to listen to a fight. A Joe Louis title fight in the late 30's or early to mid 40's was often front page news in a newspaper! If we had the same mentality about boxing today, this fight would be all over every sporting show, all over the Internet, all over the newspapers, constantly talked to death about on the radio, etc. I'm so excited about this fight, mainly because of ESB and I've learned who these guys really are. If it was the mentality of the 40's, I'd still be equally excited.
Right now I'm in Cluj, Romania. Boxing should be popular here with Bute and Diaconu and all. yeah... they show the fight free here. on 2 chanels. VIVA ROMANIA
It comes on German TV for free....There is or will be some info in The Bild on Championship fights happening in Germany...1/3 of a page ...the most sold paper in Germany...even women buy it...out side of Sunday normally has a titty girl on the first page....women get a few promi pictures. Some times one is lucky get a titty shot of some promi too. Yep...titty shot of the King of Sweden...... Even little kiddies can see it in newstands. but tittys don't mean much to the Germans...being they are natural. Just looked a titty girl on the back page, a montage of 8 on the front page. Normally only one unless they are having titty girl of the month.
Your language skills confused me a little PowerHook! Should have guessed you spoke too well to be American. Europe is perhaps quite divided then, boxing is certainly still a big draw here in Britain, for the big names at least. No offence mate, but if their is a lack of hype in Romania it's because there is little financial incentive to fund the hype(at a guess). What are your tv networks like, is most boxing shown on exclusively sports channels? Bo Bo, get your arse posting in the lounge at some point, people have been asking about you.
They had the funds to host a big K-1 turney in Bucharest a few weeks back. K-1 seems to be the prefered fight sport here. One channel is exclusively a sport channel, the other isnt. the sports chanel was showing a few classic fight this week, proly to get people interested in boxing for a few days.
Cheers. I've rarely thought about boxings popularity in other Euro countries, i'll look into it pre-fight tomorrow.
No, never. But the one thing of which you can be certain of is this; European fighters will continue to look up to and imitate USA fighters, while the USA fighters will imitate no European fighters. That's the whole story in a nut shell. :yep It's not odd though. The same is true with music.
America won't be interested in boxing in a big way until it has a half decent heavyweight to get behind. So no time in the next 100 years.
:blood Did you mean American boxing in the 70's and 80's or now? Boxing in the US is dying to say the least brother.
Aside from britain, it seems, boxing is still more popular in america, than in europe. america even has more fighters, in boxing, than the combined european total
