great thread quality stuff. Wonder if boxing will ever tighten up. In five more years will the sport be better off or worse than it's now?

    A agree good post!!
Ask any man in the street ,who's not a boxing fan , about the sport & I'll bet he say " Boxing is on a parr with Pro wrestling theyre both fixed, not real fights." Who can really blame him thinking that way?? Some of the obviously corrupt decisions & actions of certain fighters , officials, managers, promoters & even state commissions themselves are indeed extremely suspect. No longer is boxing a contest between two fighters to battle it out to decide which is the better man. More often than not the winner is decided by who the fighter is associated with.
This truly saddens me because, as Big George Foreman once said "Boxing is the ultimate sport. It takes a team working together to get a fighter ready for the ring but once that bell rings he's on his own JacK" :bbb:good

I think the eventual digitization of boxing, and the legit streaming economy will eventually solve a lot of these problems.

Also I do think you underestimate the influence of the core fans. Bad vibes and bad impressions about a fighter, a fight, or even the sport in general radiate outward to the less dedicated. As do good impressions.

Plus, even if someone might not watch a fighter on his own merit for entertainment value... fans, even the most casual fans do care about the "best". And in any endeavor, its the enthusiasm and knowledge of the core fans that spreads the word.

In the current world, upping quality and accessibility are both paramount. Boxing at its best is the most compelling sport in the world. I find a strong impression amongst the general public that boxing is riddled with problems, the best don't fight each other, judging is bad, the usual complaints.

But as we saw May 2nd, when the public think the best are fighting there is huge interest. I think boxing as a whole will become more popular once it starts happening more often.

i dig your threads, cst. youre one of a handful of posters who regularly contributes more than just fanboyism.

you are correct, the casual fan is what makes a fight an event, and they arent always interested in watching a chess match... they want violence.
fighters need to start bringing casuals to the sport by geting their face out there. floyd had the right idea when he went on dancing with the stars. he got the opportunity to connect with millions of people who otherwise would have never cared about him. whether they liked him or hated him, they now had an interest in watching him do well in the ring, or get his ass kicked.
im surprised promoters dont actively seek out spots on the thousands of tv shows out there, for the fighters they are developing. golovkin or canelo on a survivor or big brother type of show, would translate into tens of millions of dollars in their fight sales.

I've always said that in terms of PPV buys the casuals make up big numbers & do keep the sport relevant

Like it or not, casuals far outweigh the hardcores, and as the OP says they are an important part of keeping the sport going

What makes any of you not casual fans? Do you do work to discover the information you peddle or did you pick it pick it up from articles, broadcasters, and Youtube?

I don't mean to cast accusations, but from my perspective what it looks like we have here is casuals leading casuals. OP wrote a nice post, really it's good, but OP proposes to explain fight sales and the economy of the fight game without even mention of Daniel Mendoza? I gotta ask what makes you not a casual? how did you arrive at
? It seems to fly directly in the face of Mendoza School which boasts such names as Jack Johnson, Muhammad Ali, and Floyd Mayweather. The only just the biggest sellers of all time.

Hate is what sells fights, not KOs, or looks, or the mic. Those can attribute, but you danced around the core. Probably because you've not explicitly studied it or another way of saying that, because your understanding of fight economy was obtained casually. Read Christopher James Shelton's Bare Knuckle and tell me it didn't change your perspective on how fights are sold. Go out of your way to find out more about the subject and you will find information that isn't derivative of article writers whose credentials are creative writing, broadcasters whose credentials are broadcasting, or common/casual fan theory whose credentials are observing and running the old gob.

Or don't, get mad at me for calling you out on a lack of information driving a long and strong opinion like most do. I don't honestly give a damn you just seemed like you have an authentic interest so I thought I'd point you in the right direction. Start with Mendoza and work your way to King. You're plenty studied on contemporary practices but without history you're missing the big picture.

I'll definitely check Mendoza's book out.

Is it hate that sells fights or friction?

That's a damn fair point. I suppose that's mostly for you to decide once you look at the history of it all.

Would you say there was friction between the christians and jews in the late 18th century England or would you call that hate?

Would you say the American slave of the early 19th century was hated or that there was European-African racial friction in America at the time?

Again in 1910 would you say that was friction between whites and blacks in the US or hate?

Was Ali hated for dodging the draft and speaking out against racial injustice or was he a source of friction?

Floyd Mayweather, is he authentically hated?

I really can't say for you. Some periods seem more obvious than others, but it's largely a personal distinction I'd say.

Most of it is pretty common knowledge, no real need for research from mags, YT or anything else.

Yeah you got me, I'm very sorry, I'm not well versed in defensive wizards from the 1700's, I'm such a casual, or is it you're a smarmy elitist?

I didn't read any articles or do any preparation for this article, I winged it like I do most of my articles, in about 45 minutes, because I absorb **** like a sponge and don't need to. This wasn't meant to be some exhaustive study, its just me ranting and explaining all this stuff in the simplest manner possible, in layman's terms, because I'm a fairly decent communicator like that. Not trying to change the world pal, or get some kind of degree, I'm just a fan giving my opinion.

I didn't mention defense at all, did you try to do a quick check on Danny and found you can't BS yer way through him quickly because internet based information is skint?

I didn't say you need to do research for a post....who does that? That's weird. I said it's clear to me you've never done any actual research whatever exhaustive. I did offer you a chance to support your own opinion, but I guess either my making clear you seem to be as casually informed as any other either upset you too much to do so or was too correct to counter point.

I'm a smarty elitist? Do you not like being treated as you treat others? I think yer projecting. When you go around calling folk casual and presenting yourself as someone who knows better you're asking for someone who has actually done their homework to do the same to you. I'm only an elitist because you are. If you were honestly here to share information and teach then my presence and claims ought not be any bother.

The very first and last thing you said is the crux of my point. Common knowledge is unsupported bull**** for the most part. Why not put those absorption skills to use and absorb some information whose sales are not based off getting an immediate reaction? That way you can put them sick comunication and oration skills to work debunking commonly believed assumptions rather than spreading them?

Funny thing is, the fights the casuals wanted this year, like Mayweather v McGregor, Haye v Bellew, that hardcore fans thought were going to be a circus actually turned out to be pretty entertaining. And add to that AJ v Wlad which also caught the imagination of casual fans was also a great fight. And there wasn't even any real controversy in the end.

And the fights the hardcore fans were largely getting excited about, Kovalev v Ward and Canelo v GGG... let's be real, they weren't entertaining fights, controversial yes, but not that exciting.

So the fights the casual fans wanted were actually better for boxing that the fights the hardcore wanted.

No, I have no ****ing clue who "Danny" is, nor do I give a **** about him, I looked him up, glanced over some crap about him, and picked up on the fact that he incorporated a lot of defense into his fighting, voila. Hence why I said, I'm a casual when it comes to fighters from the ****ing 1700's. Hell, I've freely admitted I don't know **** about most of the fighters pre-1980 with the exception of a handful of the big names.

Who's presenting themselves as someone who knows better? I'm a fan that wrote an article giving my opinion, if you do not agree with it, or think its invalid, good for you a**hole, write your own article, I don't care, your opinion is irrelevant to me.

Let me spell it out for you.

Casual Fan: Casual-Fans are fans who aren't particularly into their fandom. They enjoy it, know some trivia, see some fights, have some stuff. Casual-Fans are more laid back.

These are the fans I'm talking about, ie, most of the people who don't care enough to go on Boxing forums.

Hardcore Fan: A "hard core fan" is someone who supports something really actively and with a lot of enthusiasm. If you never miss a game for your favorite sports team and have the names of all the players memorized, you're a hard core fan.

I'm this one, you know, not a historian. Just a devout fan that tries to catch every match I can.

Yes I know that hate sells fights as well, all kinds of hatred, but since I didn't want to have this thread deleted for inciting RACIAL TROLLING or FLAMING and I had no desire to see it turn into such, I chose to leave that little tidbit out, however that should be apparent to everyone. Although I do touch on that with the mic ability, aka **** talking, and back story, which is used to build the hate.

WOW, you've read some books about the really ancient old timers, good for you. Get your ass over to the Classic section then. Although you'll probably mock them too.

This was a rant, nothing more, nothing less, I'm not trying to change the world, I don't really care, I had a few thoughts, so I wrote them down and posted them, is it as brilliant as the works of Christopher James Shelton, no, its a ****ing thread on a Boxing forum you nitwit. But it is a hell of a lot better than your average, Floyd says Manny's feet smell, nana nana boo boo, type of threads that were dominating this forum back in 2014.

If you don't like or agree with my point, eat a dick, I don't care.

For the record, I'm not upset, I react this way to everyone.

Boxing is a con game! Promoters pick the winners, as they own the referee, boxing commission, judges, etc., such as Golovkin Vs. El Pollo for example or Kovalev Vs. SOB Ward!

Some historians believe Danny packed some of that British glass in his jaw, that's why the defensive style.
