i dunno about the states, or the rest of the world, but in england it is definitely a niche sport. i could walk down the street and not come across anyone who knows anything about boxing. in my town it is that bad that i will actually shy away from boxing conversations because i just know i will hear a stupid statement like "calzaghe would have beaten vitali i think" or "did eubank ened upknocking out hamed?" it is ridiculous. i know 2 people i can talk boxing with. obviously outside of this thread. it does seem like it isnt mainstream anymore. yes the haye fight brought big publicity, but people still know jack **** about boxing. they can tell me that shrewsbury play at ay meadow, but they cant name one middleweight champion. anyone else feel the same?
Pacquiao is making it popular in the states again. Marisa Miller(super model) was on conan o'brien talking about Pacquiao beating up margo. Beyonce just did an interview talking about him. The harry potter kid did as well. We just need a couple more big stars to break out and take on all comers.
I remember when you first started posting on ESB. You didn't know ****. And others will remember me when I first started; I didn't know ****. ...Spread the word! I talk boxing even to the girls at the water-cooler at work...
Yep. I don't even try to interact with others outside when it comes to Boxing now. Mayweather being a Heavyweight put the final nail in the door atsch
lol i reread my first ever thread the other day. it is cringeworthy lmao. do you catually remember my early days? boxing forums definitely help consolidate knowledge IMO
lo, someone asked me "do you think that pacqiaou would have beaten bruno, i know hes unbeaten and he beat ricky hatton so he probably would do" i just walked away lol
Pacquiao gets very little exposure over here. It's a real shame. Sky were hyping the hell out of Haye/Harrison and had the audacity to make it a PPV event, while they showed the Pacquiao fight for free (which was great) but didn't promote it at all. No one outside of us hardcore boxing fans would have known it was on, but everyone was talking about Haye and Audrey.
in Poland boxing is also niche it was always niche, even when Golota was on top, but it was bigger then today In Poland on top is as always football(soccer) while our team isnt playing well.Second choose will be volleyball where we have some succeses.Other choice Formula 1 with Robert Kubica or some winter sports Adam Malysz and Justyna Kowalcyk take part in(ski jumping and ski running).Of course there is a place for handball where we are third team int the world After that well maybe speedway, And then some niche sports in Poland as boxing tennis etc
exatly my experience. everyone knew the "heavyweight champ" was fighting the "olympic champ" but noone knew anything about pacman
Tell your friends to watch Mayweather Baldomir! If that doesn't make a fan out of them, I don't know what will!!! All roads leads to Floyd!!11one
Seriously, though. Boxing has always been a "niche" sport -- something a very small percentage follow on a regular basis. I remember in the 80s when Tyson was king -- nobody knew any other ****ing heavyweights at that time and conversations with casual onlookers would have been just as hilarious.
As long as Pac is out there and people are still yelling for Floyd to fight him, people are going to care about boxing beyond the hard core. Sadly's it's 90 percent of all boxing talking on places like ESPN, so promoters need to take advantage of this boon and create some more stars for the sport. It's like golf without Tiger Woods if they don't.
