Yes, boxing is absolutely a niche sport. Just because Pacquiao and Mayweather are popular with the mainstream, doesn't mean it's not a niche sport. It barely gets coverage by the mainstream media, although that's been slowly improving. But just because people pay attention to the Triple Crown, it doesn't mean that horse racing isn't a niche sport. Same idea with boxing.

Well i think that boxing is a niche sport just by its definition

Boxing is not football(soccer) not baskettball

Boxing is specific. You must be aware. We are fans we are into it but try to ask your mom dad or barber.

No wonder...all we do here is berate the fighters that draw high figures.

I remember a thread about Pac and his recent 1.15mill PPVs. And how some plonks kept arguing that he got that off Floyds back, instead of giving the guy credit for bringing boxing to the masses and giving boxing a good name, by staying active, fighting tough opponents and always being in entertaining fight. I said the same when Floyd Mosley drew high numbers....great for the sport.

Though what we don't do (and the media too) is big up fighters that are the above (active, tough fights, entertaining) ala Froch. Like Froch's next fight is on that primetime channel...AGAIN!!!

The more promoters/tv big up those fighters and damand the fights the public wants, it will continue to be a niche sport.

Thank god for ESB tho, would be lost without it.

i think it is just down to the sport itselfy. even in the heyday over here when we had bruno naz eubank benn and lewis it still wasnt massively popular.

pretty much everyone knew about the tyson - holyfield fights and the tyson -lewis fight and the tyson - bruon fights, but it was more a collection of one offs then a following.

in Montreal boxing is not at all a niche sport.

What boxing needs is local stars

I'm sure boxing is having a resurgence in the bay area with Ward and Donaire.

Look at boxing in the Philippines with Pacquiao.

St-Louis is probably buzzing about Alexander.

You have to give people a reason to watch. People like to cheer for their own.

ye but thats not so much buzz about boxing as buzz about a fighter. do the phillipinos know who the hw champ is? will st louis know who the mw champ is?

a couple of ears ago we had hatton in manchetsre, but noone knew much else.

It's like that with every sport. You don't need to know the specifics to be a fan, just watch a little.

I watch my hockey team play but I don't really watch other teams except on rare occasions. Same for 90% of people who watch hockey.

Does that make hockey a niche sport

To many belts nowadays with few stars holding those belts. It also hard to make it popular when fans don't get to see the fights they want to see when they want.

The fact that you have to say "ONE" Middleweight champion is one of the causes right there. A champion should be THE champion, not one of many beltholders.

''I think Khan should fight that Swedish guy with the tatoos that Calzaghe fought.''

''That guy from Chile(Pacquiao) was great against that Mexican(Cotto) last night wasnt he?''

''Joe Louis is lucky he never fought Jake LaMotta.''

:patschYep, it's a niche sport. I actually dont even correct people anymore, I just shrug my shoulders and say that I dont know.

By the way, as a sidenote, I was quite impressed the guy knew who Louis and LaMotta were, before actually realising what he just said.

I hear people talking about "The dude who knocked the giant out" being one of the best heavyweights since Mike Tyson.:patsch

I've honestly not ever met a person who's worth discussing boxing with. Never.:-(
