Another thing that has really hurt the sport is PPV. Casual fans are just not going to pay to see a top fight, unless it's something really unusual & massively hyped. Therefore, they don't see most of the top fights, and they certainly don't care about the lesser (non-PPV) fights. The average Joe has never even HEARD of "Friday Night Fights" or the old Tuesday fights when they were on. So, the only people even watching are hardcore fans. And on those rare occasions when a top fight is super-hyped, ad the casuals tune-in, they get treated to snooze-fests like Pac-Mosely & Wlad-Haye, or an obvious robbery like Pac-JMM III. In the old days, everyone with a TV could watch every fight that was broadcast. Ali-Frasier, fer frickin' sake, was on NETWORK TV. Do you think Ali would have been anywhere near as big if all his fights were on PPV-Cable? 95% of his fans, worldwide, would never even have seen him fight.
I've always said that Mayweather would beat Pacman in a easy 12 round UD. It would be a easy fight for Mayweather. Pacman does the same **** over and over. Big left hand thats it. Yes Pacman hits hard as hell but he would not be able to hit Mayweather. I never understood why this fight was made to be so big. Pacman has looked like **** his last two fights. He really should retire before he gets exposed. I know he got ripped off his last fight but he looked like **** in that fight. He was unable to really hurt Bradley much. No way in hell he beats Mayweather.
Fads come and go but boxing will always be here with it's long history and tradition as a gentleman's sport. People like Mayweather are a reminder of how good boxing can be to its most favoured disciples.
I can honestly say that I WILL miss Floyd. To the point where I probably won't ever get as excited as a Floyd fight. It is true that there are up and coming fighters and many big names out right now. But it's not half as builded up or hyped as Floyd.
I agree with most of what your saying, but people saying Mayweather and Pacquaio need each other for Legacy is nonsense. Both have solid legacies. They will be first ballot hall of famer's, and are the most highest paid atheletes in Sports. Nobody can take that away from either of them.
I don't really miss either of them motha****as either. Broner can pick up where Floyd left off, and Nonito can pick up where Pac left off. With the emergence of Jr., Canelo, and a few other super big names, there will be plenty of mainstream names out there in the little weights. As far as the big boys go, the Heavyweight division is fighting like hell on life support, and seems to be gaining some traction.
I know it is but had to mention that. Here's another fact, boxing always(and will continue to) outlive all those that claimed it's "dead/dying" before.
i dont think boxing is dead. but the politics involved in the game are doing it more damage than good. feuds between promotional organizations (GBP and top rank), inhouse match making and record padding are making promoters pockets bigger but are turning a lot of fans off of the sport because the best dont fight the best. boxing would have the same hype as the ufc amongst casual fans, if promoters would work together to give fans the fights they want to see. i will always love boxing, but the politics that corrupt the game disgust me.
