I'm a sucker for the sport but, and even though I've already bought this PPV, this fight just goes to show how much the game is fading and will soon ONLY be a "niche" sport.

The undercard stinks and I can't of these 2 fighters being even remotely favored to beat ANY GREAT welterweight.

Magarito is tough, but SOOOOO LIMITED.

Cotto is good, but BEFORE you start putting him and ATG in the same sentence:nut imagine him against:

    SRR
    SRL
    Napoles
    Hearns
    Tito
PRIME DLH (and I hate him)
and on and on and on

But nowadays they put this **** on PPV and seem perplexed when it get "low PPV buys.":-(

So your argument in saying todays welterweights suck is saying Cotto loses to the absolute best of the past 75 years

    Great point! :good

Cotto could eventually find himself in the top 10 of welters over the last 50 years.

    That is not too shabby.

    :rofl :rofl :rofl

Are you talking about the same Cotto who was nearly oiut against the very limited feather fisted Corley?

Cotto into labor with Tito's child after Tito gets done with him.

the problem with boxing today is not the welterweight division...quite frankly I believe that between the welterweights and the middleweights they are saving boxing! what has always anchored the sport was the heavy weights and they have been lacking since the departure of Lennox Lewis(who I am not too fond of):deal

I'm with you all the way.....

I think it was just me ranting about the fact that they keep stuffing these PPVs down my throat, and I keep buying them:lol:

the only thing i can somewhat agree with here is your claim that they are charging for this fight....in the state of boxing these days, they REALLY shouldnt charge for any fight. Infact, they should be looking at a different deal with someone who can actually promote the sport better.
The sad part is, its the money hungry fighters and promoters ruining the sport...not the other way around

It's unfair to judge a current fighter against a great of the past. No matter what happens, unless you are biased or ignorant, you are going to pick the ATG if the two fighters are of the same standard. Why? Because one is totally proven and the other probably isn't. You can't effectively judge Cotto against De La Hoya because one may not have reached his prime while the other has one fight left. How can anyone compare Cotto vs. Napoles at this stage? You can't. Mantequilla should win every time, unless, like, I said, yuo are biased or ignorant.

I don't like any of the 'current vs. past' threads as it's the same thing. It's always the same bunch who pick one guy and another who pick the other. Unless it's in the classic forum, anyway.

And aside from that, I geuinely don't think the welterweights are that bad today. Comparing them to a hand picked crop of the greatest welterweights of all-time doesn't prove this. Instead, go back to another era of welterweights and you will find that this era is not the worst.

One thing I really hate about looking back on past greats is how they over time become more and more and more inflated. Almost to the point where they cannot be touched.

They were human just like anyone else. And don't forget if you are looking really far back the camera does lie. Most sporting events which were filmed in the golden era of television were heavily edited and sped up because producers felt it wasn't entertaining at it's regular speed.

so far we have mayweahter (dont know if he is serious about retirement), cotto, williams, margarito, mosley as your top 5 welters and quintana berto cintron clottey to fill in the rest. I'm fairly satisfied with this crop of welterweights i just wish the top would fight each other more matchups like say

    mayweather-cotto
    cotto-williams
    margarito-mosley
    mosley-mayweather

    hopefully these matchups take place.
