Totally bogus. I have a TV with no cable. However, I watch every ppv fight that comes down the pike.

And my whole crew of boxing nuts watches the fights the same way that I do.

I am not sure what is mainstream anymore. In the US, it is (American) football, then everything else. Basketball was big 20 years ago, now not nearly as much. Baseball was the country's pastime, now it's almost a refuge for geeks and those who crave anachronism. With the saturation of media coverage thru tv, cable, satellite, internet and lowly print, there is just more need for content. Sporting events, like reality shows, fill this need perfectly because they require little in the way of scripting or production. The unintended result of this saturation is fragmentation. So many people (ourselves included) live in their little niches with their own sets of heroes and their own narratives. These are very different times than the 20's, 70's or even 90's.

And who else was keeping it relative during Roy Jones, Jr. great run? After Chavez started falling off in 93, it sure wasn't Lewis or Whitaker or Bowe. Mayweather will pass and will be replaced. The Latin American audience, the strongest sector in the US, will always be strong and will be always have a slew of up and comers.
