And television is a spectacle, the point of which is to gain viewers, sell advertising, and make money. This is what separates the amateur version of the sport from the professional business. The amateurs can compete for love of the game but the professionals are entertainers.

Boxing is a sport that entertains. It's not entertainment for entertainments sake. Certain styles have more entertainment value to certain people whom are mostly casuals. For people that know and understand boxing in all it's forms the entertainment value is there. However, there are bloopers as in anything and a lot of times they are due to the skill level of the opponents and fighters not willing to engage and just straight up running or holding. A fighter should clinch when he needs to clinch and move when he needs to move. That's part of the game. He also needs to fight when it's time to fight and box when it's time to box. One needs to understand boxing to really appreciate it. The older generations understood boxing a lot more and they enjoyed it a lot more. It was more popular because of that. If a fighter is Ace at what he does, then he is a joy to watch no matter if he's slipping and moving, or bumping and banging because it's gonna make sense to do it when he does it.

There are only two obligations a boxer should have:

    1. Win

    2. Take as little physical punishment as possible

If the fans aren't satisfied with what they're watching, that's their problem. Go watch MMA where every bout is a street fight and skill and technique don't matter nearly as much.

You're risking your life just by stepping into that ring. The idea that the athletes who take that risk need to maximize said risk as much as possible just so the fans can get their fix is something I just can't fathom.

Deaths from boxing per year: 10.
Deaths from skiing per year: 41.
Deaths from roofing per year: 50.
And that ain't nothing compared to electricians, commercial fishermen, lumberjacks, farmers, power line workers, truckers, and cell phone tower workers. Boxing is not a dangerous job. You are more likely to be murdered as a cab driver or a convenience store clerk than to die in the ring. You are more likely to die on the job as a garbage collector. Boxing is not a dangerous job. Scuba diving is dangerous. Mountain climbing is dangerous. Motorsports, bull riding, surfing, and base jumping are dangerous. Boxing is not dangerous. There are 33,000 traffic fatalities a year. You risk your life more driving to the fight than getting in the ring.

In amateur boxing yes, in pro boxing it is only about entertainment.

You have to put your statistics in ratios for them to have validity.
You can multiply the number of roofers in the world thousands of times over to the amount of people that actually box. The percentage of boxers who die because they box is exponentially higher than that of roofers who die from a roofing accident.
Boxing by far more dangerous than the activities you noted.

Whether you like it or not, its the fighters who actually throw down who keep the sport afloat.

The only skill fighters I can name that sold PPV's are Ali and Mayweather and it was their loud mouth and egotistical attitude that kept people interested in them, not their fighting skill itself.

Pernell Whitaker, James Toney, Winky Wright, Bernard Hopkins, Andre Ward..........Great boxers all of them, only people dont pay money to see them perform.

The sport is already watering down. Skill is the only thing that separates boxing from the cheap thrill entertainment of this new bar fight culture of casual fans who have ADHD and are use to watching UFC where the level of professionalism and preparation is **** poor. I personally don't find toe to toe (aka trench warfare as I call it) entertaining because imo it's pointless. If guys are just exchanging shots utilizing no defense, strategy or movement, why even hide under the guise of being a boxing match. A coin should be flipped giving the winner of the toss first punch and the two combatants should just take their respective turns until one can't stand anymore. It's also too easy for a guy like for a recent example John Molina Jr to go out on their shields and they're dime a dozen. I never equated someone as such having true heart just cuz they go out and get the **** kicked out of them. It's just laziness and fools gold. Real heart is how a fighter prepares and goes about evolving as a fighter. Doing their homework and working on their weaknesses and becoming an all around fighter. Boxing will always be a thinking mans sport and thank god. Sorry the best fighters are usually the more skilled guys lmao and they shouldn't be dumbed down just so a lessor fighter whose more limited should have a better chance. That's pure nonsense and this new millennial bull**** way of thinking where losers are rewarded the same as winners. Natural selection needs to be re-introduced into the world otherwise this Kim kardashion bullsheet is just going to continue to further dumb down the world.

What the hell are you talking about? It's called inside fighting. It's a set of skills that are probably more difficult to do well than the outside fighting style you applaud. Go watch Roberto Duran vs Carlos Palomino or James Toney vs Iran Barkley. That's masterclass right there. Julio Cesar Chavez and Henry Armstrong were great inside fighters too. You know, there's more than one way to box. Not every great fighter pot shots on the outside. A lot of them "get in the trenches", and it's more than just a coin toss.

That's funny, 'cause I figured this run, hug, punch style was modern Kardashian bull****. I figure it's making people soft, and we need to reintroduce them to something primal and savage like boxing to keep us anchored in the real world.

That's just not true though. Liking action doesn't mean we're always craving someone to be having a seizure on the floor. If you think people don't watch boxing for the skill then you're out of touch. I hate watching two guys with very little skill abandoning their defense and just trading sloppy punches. I don't like Figueroa for that reason. People like watching competence, and competence entails intelligence and ability. If you watch boxing to watch violence and nothing else I feel bad for you.

There's simply no reason whatsoever for Rigondeaux not trying to take off Agbeko's head. Agbeko was terrified. It was a disgraceful performance and Rigondeaux should never ***** about money or a lack of fans.

    Boxing is entertainment.

Wrestling is entertainment, MMA is sports/entertainment and boxing is a sport. Please let's maintain and celebrate these distinctions.
