Huh??? Bowe did not sound as bad as some write. He listen and wa quick with his answers. I remember hearing Meldrick though and that was sad.
A work colleague of mine mentioned that he'd been to a lecture from some kind of sports physio who focused alot on the impact of boxing on brain damage. To cut a long story short, the main problem was with those fighters that are weight drained. It seemed obvious when it was pointed out; there is a lining of water around the brain that cushions impacts against the skull. When a fighter is dehydrated this lining thins out and the brain is allowed to touch the skull - killing brain cells and resulting in brain damage. So when a fighter has to lose those last few ounces on the day of the weigh-in he loses mainly water, which then puts him at risk of brain damage. Also, fighting in foreign altitude/climates can increase the loss of water a fighter experiences during a fight - having the same effect as the above. I'll leave you to think about your own case studies, but it really is food for thought!
That is why many dont even consider it a sport. To most it is still fighting. Definetly the most 'grueling' sport out there. Boxing is no joke and you can get hurt/killed in there. If there is something to encourage your kid not to get into - it is boxing. But if he likes to fight might as well throw him in there.
It's weird thinking about all of this and debating whether I still want to do it or not, somehow the answer is always yes. And when it comes down to it I would have gotten diabetes or died of heart failure anyway, at least it's keeping me in shape.
if thats whats keeping you in shape go for it man. I know how fun that **** can be, and you got to ask yourself if you would even bother to get into shape if it wasnt for boxing.
Boxing is no game, it's a dangerous sport, and it makes me angry when people like Zelenoff act like it's just a game and are only out there to act tough, boasting how they're gonna crush peoples skulls in and so on... Does he even realize how much of a risk it is to step into the ring for a pro fight? You can get seriously hurt. He was lucky to escape with no injuries in that fight. And what's more, he's not even a boxer, not even a bad one, he can't protect himself, he just can't fight ****... that's like playing soccer on the highway. Boxing ain't no game. This is not like playing Fightnight on the Playstation...
If you all remember Bowe tried to join the Marines about 10 years back. I had a friend that was working in the processing barracks at Parris Island at that time. As you know Bowe was dropped after 3 days of boot camp for a number of reasons. My buddies job was to interview all recruits being dropped. To find out if they were abused, lied to by their recruiter, etc. He told me Bowe seemed like he was drunk, or on drugs? That he could barely sign his name, and his speach was very slurred, and that was quite awhile ago. So he has had this problem for awhile. To bad, I feel for the guy.
Whitaker's damage is not that bad, relatively speaking. I wouldn't really call Taylor a slickster. Benitez was slick and he is in terrible condition from the blows he sustained. Jimmy Young suffered from it too. Some brawlers have horrible brain-damage, such as Bobby Chacon and Jerry Quarry in the last stages of his lfe. I would mention Joe Frazier, he sounds punch-drunk, but people say he's just plain drunk and not really punch drunk. Sparring also plays a big role. Terry Norris was known to go all out in sparring. The damage he took in fights wasn't to the extent to make you think he'd end up brain-damaged, but he's been slurring his words for years.
bowe definetly is ****ed up from the fight game. And it happens all too often. I hope lennix statys away from the ring and stays retired.
One of the guys mentioned over in the Carr thread, I think, is proof of this. Livingstone Bramble took maybe more head flush head shots than just about anyone, especially in his journeyman years. He still sounds very good after retirement. Not to mention, I'm sure he smoked his share of ganja. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JsABZPCPK8o
