ESPN2 usually doesn't show title fights between popular champions. UFC 75 on the other hand was basically a PPV shown on free TV. Of course it's going to draw in huge ratings! If Mayweather-De La Hoya was shown on Spike instead of PPV it would draw just as good ratings. Probably better.
Dude! If the Floyd vs DLH fight was shown on ESPN or anther cable network it would have been ****ing bananas! 4.7 Mill would have been nothing! Believe me! They did over 2 Mill PPV buys at $55 ****ing blickies......That means WAAAAAAAAY more than half didn't buy it but REALLY wanted to see it.
After the UFC fad is over, boxing will still be around. You can only dress up that boring rolling around on the ground **** for so long before people get BORED. UFC will never match the glory, history and accomplishments of the Sweet Science. **** UFC!!
The UFC, as a "mixed" martial art, has a much longer history than boxing. In fact, it INCLUDES boxing. An MMA guy can name predecessors as diverse as Dempsey (boxing), Gotch (wrestling), Kimura (judo), Wallace (American karate), Helio (BJJ), and DOZENS of others. He can also read all of their manuals AND USE EVERYTHING IN EVERY ONE OF THOSE MANUALS AGAINST HIS OPPONENTS. Now that's a history! If you want to get really specific, you could nail down the first relatively modern, Western MMA gym as Barton-Wright's...which puts MMA on the map just twenty years after boxing's first Queensberry champion.
Very true...and most were also dissapointed with the Fight with Rampage and Henderson...Most of the people who viewed both the fight cards were NOT hardcore boxing or MMA fans...they were casual fans and don't really appreciate the little things these guys do in the ring or Cage that are not KO's or TKO's. I like both sports and have trained in both. I appreciate the not so noticable skills that they display that casual fans won't notice. But I wasn't dissapointed by either fight card...IMO they both were great. Maybe they didn't live up to all the hype but it was good for both sports respectively.
I don't agree...maybe the UFC will be gone but MMA will be around, just like any form of martial arts! They've been around forever and both sports will continue to stick around. I do feel boxing will always be the premier one on one combat sport though or at least for a VERY long time.
Well said...nothing wrong with having a preference or likeing one more than the other....but both sports should be respected. They bring different attributes to the fans that everyone should apprecaite.
a wet paper bag with scissors in their hands at that. there are more failures in competing boxers than ufc and therefore boxing is the tougher sport
