My mom's 5'5, and my dad's 5'8, as is my uncle.

Yup that's just the way things are here. Maybe the older generation aren't as tall but where I'm from iv seen under 16 Gaelic teams where not one lad was under 6 foot. Being 5'7 or 8 would be considered small these days

 

Being short is only a handicap if you make it one.

 

Might go back further someone in the older generation might have been shorter. I'm a lot taller than both my parents so its not always a good indicator
