The OP makes a fair point I think. Like all sports there are epochs and there's no doubt we're at the end of one. Lots of retirements falling at the same time, and the latest surge of TV network musical chairs have led to a sudden, screeching change of pace - especially in the UK. It's not that hard to say without being a doom-monger, is it?
I agree if you compare it to last year. I think last year was poor too. But I agree with him if he would have compared it to a couple of years earlier. There was still a lot of rubbish but there was also if plenty of British interest at all levels on more regularly. Can you deny that every fella going to America to fight on undercards is killing it? I’m not stupid the boxers are happy “ticks a box off the list” and it’s where the money is but I can’t see how anyone can deny it’s crap for fans. The cards on now are dull as hell! Like I said I know there was a lot of crap and mismatches on in the so called boom but there was always some boxing to look forward to on the horizon. Now it feels like we’re going months each time we have to wait for something interesting, evenly matched or big at any level. I think he has a point.
No, it never will be dead and these things swing in cycles like all sport and teams have good phases. But it’s certainly got a debilitating disease at the moment that needs treating/curing by binning Hearn from the exclusive deal on Sky. Hopefully that can get more good cards because they’ll be competing. I know people say who are they going to get, there are not many names signed to people to fill cards. People don’t care regular competitive boxing at Area, English and British level would do me. Rather than waiting for 4am for average stuff.
Without attracting a younger fan base the sport declines as the die hards peg it, seems to me a lot of millenium babies are more into mma these days because thats the cool thing to watch.
I agree. I’m a so called milenial and am embarrassed by most of my generation to be honest haha. I agree with you, many are in to MMA but with the rise of Joshua I think many are now watching boxing casually too compared to 10 years ago. Many would say this was good but all I see it’s done is allow everything to be PPV as it’s all these people have knew and think it’s normal. Most of them are too stupid to notice a 1/250 match up and lap it up off Hearns undies. I believe it’s to the detriment to proper fans. I don’t care what people say about them being the best things for boxing.
Joshua is way too inactive for my liking, 2 fights a year both milking the PPV. Best thing that could happen is for Joshua to get a few beatings.
Need more of the Fowler v Fitzgerald type cards. Saying that, that was a lot to do with there being an abundance of quality Merseyside fighters who jump at fighting in front of their home crowd.
Aye the glory days of Haye v Bellew 2 and a washed up Khan and Brook fighting bums! Miss those days. British boxing is pretty much where it has been since Joshua rose to stardom, only he is a having a fight in America. The only other difference is Hearn has taken his eye of the ball so there isn't as much rolling in sky sports glitter anymore.
Matchroom free shows are dead. WBSS was great last weekend and the next round will be even better. Warren has Warrington Galahad as well as Dubois Gorman. Hearn has already rushed fighters such as Cheeseman Ritson Fowler to no success so he won’t want to risk pushing others to quickly. So unfortunately all matchroom free shows will be poor for a few years.
Enjoyed Josh Taylor last week. Sky need to realise that Hearn is taking the p1ss and use other promoters.
If we are talking about boxing being dead or dying and Joshua's inactivity being a factor in that, what are we comparing him to? He fights twice a year, so does Wilder, and the less said about Fury's activity the better. Hatton fought twice a year on average after he beat Tszyu. Calzaghe the same after he beat Eubank. Same as Lewis for pretty much the final decade of his career. So the question to ask would be why should Joshua be expected to fight more often than world title standard fighters from this country over the last two/three decades?
Joshua is the flag bearer for UK boxing (I’m sure you’d admit). He’s the one kids look up to, he’s the one that does all these numbers, he’s the heavyweight KO artist. 9 months between fights is too long. I’m still shocked Eddie hasn’t took him to China to fight Zhang.
