Ive always defended boxing against such sentiments, but its for real this time, boxing is near its lowest point since Ive been a fan and the state of it is indefensible.

That being said you did miss out listing some potential big fights. Usyk vs Fury is a realistic event, there are whisperings and optimistic headlines for Wilder vs AJ, Haney vs Loma, Davis vs Garcia.

But ya, regardless, the sport is hurting right now and everyone is to blame (fighters, promoters, networks, fans).

    Sad.

    Is UFC 90% dead though?

Israel vs Perieri likely did over 700k

    UFC 257 did over a million, 259 did 800k, 261 did 700k, 264 did over a million, 268 did 700k,

Not great numbers but not horrible either, especially in the current era of streaming. I was in a fight stream one time where there was over 5 thousand viewers in that stream alone, let alone the other 10 streams available.

I could be wrong but I think just about every UFC event has been sold out.

Where there numbers I think really show through though is the number of views they get on social media and youtube. Its not uncommon for their basic content like interviews to get over a million views in a week.

To me the UFC isnt doing great but its doing better than boxing and isnt in a horrible spot, imo. Their numbers might suffer due to streaming and their horrible espn buy structure, but overall I think their pretty relevant and close to the mainstream pulse in the US.

I think the problem is your memory and perception. Boxing is by far the best it has been in the 20 years I’ve been watching. You’re talking about the days of HBO, when we had big name fighters constantly fighting bums on ppv. Now we have all these Euro fighters in the mix, we have different promoters and channels to watch. There are brilliant fights happening all the time. It sounds like you’re not a fan of boxing today, to think Benavidez vs Canelo is some super interesting fight? That’s not even a fight I care to see, it’s not even on my radar. You outgrew boxing, that’s cool, go watch lawn bowls or whatever.

Moaners! You’re old and you don’t know who all these new whippersnapper boxers are. The number of world class elite boxers is insane at the moment. I’ve never seen a density of elite talent that exists at 135-140 like today.
Remember when Floyd was considered an atg at 130 for beating Corrales and some journeymen? There was a thread the other day talking about Beterbiev maybe being a top 10 light heavy if he beats Bivol. We are talking about a guy with a 100% KO record and has beaten Gvozdyk. Floyd number 1 of all time for beating Corrales, Beterbiev not even top 10 despite beating a far superior fighter, and winning all his fights in far more of a dominant fashion. Most boxing fans moan and have absolutely no idea. The OP is clearly a Mexican boxing fan and doesn’t follow the sport more broadly.

We just need the best boxers fight the guys people want to see them fight.
Truth be told, Canelo the only one doing it.

Boxing just died when Gervante Davis got himself arrested after assaulting a woman, and Errol Spence got into another auto wreck, not being able to meet Bud Crawford in a mega fight.

After the kid almost dying on MNF, you can bet lowering your head as a ball carrier will be illegal next season.

Other than yourself there are probably hundreds of other Americans that even know about one of those bouts.

Parents and most kids nowadays don't want any chance of being injured while playing a sport. Participation of most sports in the USA is declining.

I miss that a lot as well. I used to record every boxing show on VHS. Those were the days.

The sport does seem to be in a lull at the moment or a downward trajectory. It wasn't so long ago that it seemed like things were on the up, we had Joshua undefeated and looking to unify vs Wilder in what would hopefully be a huge fight, Canelo the biggest name in boxing moving up and taking titles on what looked like would be an unstoppable rise through the divisions, Spence and Crawford looking to be on a collision course for welterweight dominance, a rising star in Inoue winning the WBSS in a thriller vs Donaire with the prospect of fighting Casimero.

But now with Canelo and Joshua, the two big stars and cash cows of boxing both being knocked back down to earth, many of the big fights simply not happening, Fury going off the rails and fighting Chisora in a pointless 3rd fight, Inoue being far too inactive, giving us one stand out performance but with Casimero's career spiraling and Fulton moving up and Akhmadliev injured and tied up with a mandatory doesn't look like the Monster will have a memorable start to 2023, the whole sport is literally dead.

Something needs to change. But I am hopeful that Fury/Usyk will happen this year, hopefully that begins a change and we start seeing these fights we've wanted for so long finally get made.
