My uncle has played in a jazz band as long as I've been alive and I've been to many of his gigs and played in them as well. I can assure you there is no greater appreciation for "lesser" jazz music. This quote is absolutely ****ing ******ed but so is most of what Foreman says. "This night, the referee will be the most important man in the ring other than the two fighters."
"He broke his legs!!" but seriously, I'm a musician myself and I see what he's saying about boxing. I think he means improvisational and esoteric ways of jazz are much like a "Technical" boxing style. The more "Technical" it gets, the less crowd-pleasing. But, to your point: "There's a fella named Page..."
He's wrong on both sides of his analogy though. Currently, the two best boxers in the world are also the two most popular. It's just a totally idiotic statement that couldn't possibly be further from the truth. It's laughable to the point that I wonder if he was even serious when he said it.
You're being harsh, but we're basically on the same page. Sounds great at first, but then you actually think about the quote and it doesn't make sense. Floyd is popular not because of his style but because of his personality and out of the ring antics, so I think that's a bad counter-example of trying to disprove that aspect of Foreman's quote. We can go down a huge list of great fighters that were under-appreciated because they were great technicians and not KO-producing machines.
You're right. The analogy only applies to American and maybe Cuban boxers. For Europeans, boxing is probably closer to Polka..or Disco (The Robot).
Leonard- Hagler may be the best fight/best boxing i ever seen but Hagler-Hearns get mentioned more often. I guess that proves what Foreman said.
Only guys who don't know **** about Mayweather, Whitaker, and Hopkins call them boring overall. I admit they have some snoozers but their skill is off the charts and they do have some pretty good fights to watch even for casuals. Here's fights these so called "boxing fans" should look at. Whitaker- Nelson, Jones, Paez, Mcgirt series, Chavez, Rivera 1 Mayweather- N'Dou, Chavez of 01, Corley, Hatton, Mosley, Judah, Manfredy, G. Hernandez, Burton Hopkins- Johnson, Echols series, Allen 2, Mercado series, Joppy, Baptist, Aquino, Lipsey
Floyd is not popular with the general public because of his boxing skills, tough. Hardcore fans? Yes. But not the general public. We all know his persona is what sells PPV #s. It's the same with jazz. It's not a commercially viable genre because it doesn't appeal to the masses. Just as the more technical boxers are typically less crowd-pleasing, so are the more technical musicians. Arturo Gatti is to this day one of the more popular names the general public knows, not because of his boxing skills or technique, but because he always went to war and provided a good scrap.
Wait until you see the footage I was able to extract from the Salido/Juanma fight. PED-o-files will be a household name when this bomb hits!!
