Hopkins is doing what he has to do, the average guy dont even know who the hell Calzaghe even is, the extremely low numbers of the Kessler/Calzaghe fight prove this. Hopkins knows being controversial sells, if saying "I will never lose to a white boy" is going to make him another couple hundred thousand bucs and get the fight some air time on ESPN shows, he will do it, and so would I, if I was in his position.
Nah I think it mostly is a case of identifying with the guys in the ring. Which is not necesarily racist. I would agree that boxings marketability is not secured through nationalistic sentiments.
I think many are too a point because like I said recent dominance in boxing for the last 40 odd years has been by Blacks and before them Italian and before that Irish hence why many are subconciously racist though in this case it would pro black racism. I don't mind that because i understand it but I do mind when I see boxers like Anthony in this video saying stuff like this - it certainly doesn't help race relations. But this is why if you look you see so many Eastern Europeans breaking the mould now, drive. If there were more boxing gyms in Africa you'd see Africans dominating not because of race but because of the poverty there and the desire to surpass it. The simple fact is almost all Americans no matter the colour have a better life than the majority of Eastern Europeans which is why there is currently no Black American HW champion and so many EE's. Impoverished peoples / countries generally spawn the best boxers, as a general rule that is.
Its nothing to do with boxing its an American social problem. You cant tell who will win ANYTHING from their color or race. All you can tell is the person who makes these sort of comments isn't the sharpest tool in the box Never judge a book by its cover springs to mind.
Someone should have told B-Hop that Calzaghe's handspeed is quite faster than a plethora of black fighters.
