Unfortunately the vid isn’t playing for me. No matter, I’ve likely seen the compilation in question. Some boxing legends are a joy to watch on the heavy bag - entertainment in its own right. Better than some actual fights. You can marvel at a Foreman thumping amd denting the bag with ungodly power. But then you can watch Louis, hitting the bag with power shots so precisely - as if Joe is hitting the bag exactly where he intends, to the nearest millimetre, with all his power efficiently transmitted to the exact target area. It’s short, but the vision of Ali hitting the bag in 66 training for the London fight is fantastic. So swift and fluid in combination, and, no mistake, there is some nice juice on his shots - plenty of snap to those punches. Also like Manny Pac’s machine gunning of heavy bags in staccato rhythm. Very pleasing.
Yeah there was Ali starting in the video then Foreman, Tyson, Pac, Mayweather, Cotto, Holyfield, Louis and Marciano. I found it good to watch the different styles on a single video so thought I’d share it. You’re right about Louis he had a pretty unique style on the heavy bag that is hard to describe.
I think Louis threw certain shots a bit like Ali but with more thought behind creating maximum damage and destruction.
Hi Buddy. Talking of Foreman and the heavy bag, while in Zaire to cover the fight, Norman Mailer wrote a piece about just such, according to Mailer both combatants shared the same gym, Foreman would have the morning slot, while Ali was arriving in the afternoon, Mailer would write that he had seen most of the greats hit the heavy bag, Louis, Marciano, to name a few, BUT nothing like the way Foreman hit the bag, even with Saddler standing and holding it, the bag would fly up to the ceiling, add to that Foreman had his own bag, which was 30lbs or so heavier than the normal ones, Mailer " It was a sight to behold, it was like a watching a giant chopping down a huge tree, the gym fell silent, and I am sure the thuds could be heard a mile away, the crease in the bag was a full 12 inches deep, poor Ali had to walk past that bag for weeks, it surely sent a shiver down his spine " from the pen of a great. stay safe hombre, chat soon.
Terrific recollections Mike. A newer gen. might dismiss the older guard, particularly at HW due to incremental increases in size. However, from my reading of comments on YT by old, young and in between, Foreman hitting the heavy bag is still, a timeless jaw dropping sight. I know some are relatively young because of the fact of their surprise at seeing a young, “skinnier”’version of a very mean George destroying the bag, their having only been exposed to the second coming of heavy Foreman - a far more Cuddly incarnation of George by comparison. Lol.
I also can't see the vid. But I hope its got some footage of Rocky Marciano. He savages the heavy bag. You can really see the force that he punched with. Plus the heavy bag was enormous I think It was near 300 pounds.
