Excellent editorial again from Glyn Leach, he has called into question the conveyor belt of PPVs and focused on the actual substance of the match-up rather than the hyped up 'world champion v anyone' - ppv model that currently exists.

Why dont Sky reward regular subsribers with discounts of the next PPV and try to reward customer loyalty. They need to rethink their PPVs, as we are not getting the big fights that most of us crave. I don't see Amir Khan, for example, being taken off PPV whilst he is a world champion, nor david haye, but they should be doing more to force both to make the bigger fights or make them take less and pass on the savings to us - the punters.

great stuff from glyn he makes a good point the way things are going its more and more geared to PPV which means the way things are done should be changed especially in a day and age where we dont have the mega stars of Tyson etc etc

It's tricky. Boxers have short careers and think short term. Promoters and tv companies have longer life spans and would be better to think long term. But they can't because once they've built up fighters with a long-term plan...the fighters cash in for short-term rewards.

PPV is bad for the sport. But try telling Haye or Khan to put their next fight, which could always be their last fight, on regular Sky...

is the BM for March out already????

I do not agree PPV is bad for the sport like some posters will say. Without the PPV model boxing in the UK would be left behind. What there needs to be is a minimum requirement for a PPV.

A minimum of one World Level fight from the UK (i.e Khan/Haye)
A minimum of one World level fight from the US
A minimum of 3 domestic title and above fights on the undercard.

I have no problem with PPV, I have a big problem with being ripped off.

I think subscribers get it a couple of days early. It's generally out last Thursday of every month

be intresting to see what the Hattons come up with for the Khan card. if we get...

    Khan vs McCloskey
    Rhodes vs Konecny
    Crolla vs Rees
    Quigg vs Arthur

and then we go to the US for

    Berto vs Ortiz
    Cloud vs Erdei
    Caballero vs Litzau 2

I would happily pay £15 for that.

Yes I agree with this. I am happy to pay for a PPV but I want to see a quality World level fight and a quality undercard with competitive fights. We are not getting that from Sky and it will be interesting to see if they will listen to the fans and do something about it.

I think thats the point it seems to me sometimes fighters/promoters think its just a licence to print money.

They have an obligation to give value for money

Id be happy if they just did good undercards. 1 Big fight with 3 quality undercard bouts and im happy with that. They dont all have to be world beaters, just solid and competitive match-ups at around British level.

Weve all seen the success MMA have had from pitting several competitive bouts on a single PPV and sky should follow that.

Less talking from the backroom team also. I enjoy a good build up but lately it seems the team are just talking **** to fill time in. If youve got time to fill give me some highlight reels for upcoming bouts to build them up.

Hell take a look at the division the headliners in and show us who he could face in the future. part of the fun of boxing is the build up to main events and they just dont hype the fights up enough. Half the time sky will show no interest in a boxer and then when someone like khan fights them try to push them on the public as a superstar yet the general public have no clue who they are.

    Rant over!!!!

    undecards need improving.

we want more match ups that are actually competitive, decent clash of styles that bring competitive and exicting fights.

I think sky should not be such robbing c&nts and put khan tune up on normal sky channel!.

And i think if any of froch, haye or khan got a big fight on bbc/itv,then boxing could do well from it.
thats how you bring boxing into public eye.

As long as a card featuring Haye-Harrison and Groves v someone can attract as many buys as it did nothing will change.

However evrytime you put on a bad ppv like the above or
Green v Briggs in australia and
Mosley v Mora in the USA casual fight fans begin to think the sport at the highest level is crap and drift to MMA.

Good undercards don't sell PPV's because it's hard to market a whole card to casual fans but they do help to keep people interested. Promoters themselves need to work on establishing themselves as a brand in the way Don King used to.

It's the whole culture of boxing. Media and promotion. Anyone watching big boxing fight simply doesn't expect a good card anymore and probably haven't done for 15 years or so. People in boxing need to acknowledge the mistakes they've made in the past and that it needs to change.

Good undercards don't sell that PPV but they do sell Boxing, and therefore grow the fanbase of the sport which leads to higher PPV numbers.

Allot of people that watched Groves vs Anderson on the Haye undercard would want to watch DeGale vs Groves. They no DeGale from the Olympics and have seen Groves is an exciting fighter.

    Nothing sells boxing like boxing.

What you say about establishing themselves as a brand is correct. Goldenboy will put on a good card like Marquez vs Diaz 2 (although i don't personally think its was great at all) and then 3 months later do Mosley vs Mora.

If a promoter like Top Rank or GBP, or in the UK Warren and Hayemaker, or the SBO and HBO tv networks bult up a brand of great, fan friendly value for money PPV's it wouldnt be a problem.

Genuinley if there has been 3 other fights like Groves vs Anderson shown live on the Haye vs Harrison card I don't think people would have complained as much.

The major issue with boxing in this country is theres no co-promotion. Sky are in a position where they can force this to happen but they seem reluctant.
