Bald we aint on bout a street fight, im on about a boxing match where in all likely of scenarios the 1st one or two punches that connect wont knock you out.

therefore it is a different outlook im not talking specifically in the fight im talking about build up changing room etc.

Bearing in mind mental strentgh can be shown in a variety of ways.

eg jake lamotta mental toughness, someone who was unfortunate not to have the best of skills yet still waded in every fighter and gave oit his all.

Floyd who despite taken two horrendous punches gainst shane still went after shne risking gettin knocked out but still charged after him nd took the fight.

Manny despite fighting slower fighters is still facing bigger fighters bringing the fight etc

I'd be intrigued at some of the classic forum posters opinion on this.

You have to train Physically for the fight anyway so its more mental and smarts fighters are the best fighters lifetime.

i agree with this, you can be a very successful boxer with nothing but great technique.
But i also think that ATG level boxers need something extra deep in there mind to push them to that next level.

Its physical first so you can reach top level and overcome lesser obstacles,
but its mental where both fighters are at similar physical level.

See Mayweather-Mosley ... it simple that Molsey is not fit physically anymore
to compete against prime top#3 pvp boxer who is much faster and conditioned
than him. But see Floyd who is afraid to fight PAC because PAC knocks people
out while Floyd have tools to dominate him but he is insure about himself.
Again Mosley is strong mentally to enter ring with PAC while most probably
physically he will end up on a stretcher.

I believe boxing is more a mental sport than a physical one. At least at the top level.

You look at the majority of elite fights, boxers pick their punches, they don't just punch wildly, this is a thinking man's sport, just like UFC is. If anything UFC can be considered more mental sport than actually physical as one wrong move, kick, punch can end the fight in an instance, which is why we see stand offs and controlled pressure e.t.c and not just two sluggers going at it waiting for the first one to drop.

Sure there are exceptions to the rule, but to me if you are going to perform at a high level, then ring smarts is more important than thee physical aspect.

    "Ring smarts"

Is this a purely mental thing, or are we spilling over into the technical side of boxing now I wonder???

The training, the road work, the disipline that it takes to become a successful boxer, take tons of mental strength. IMO boxing is more mental.

Physical ... hands down ... everything can go down the drain with a body shot or a solid blow to the chin ... there's no mental strengh that can prevent u from hitting that canvas ... getting up is where the mental part kicks in and even then u need the physical ...

Mental strength can give u an egde but if u don't have the physical tools u can't do anything with it ... reguardless of what u see ... ur NEVER going to see an ELITE fighter without physical advantages over average fighters

Bearing in mind i have seen plenty of "bigger" fighters quit in the ring because their smaller opponent had too much will and fight in him and would not stop fighting, despite these guys having the strength and size and height they gave up.
