I answered the thread title, try doing the same.:smoke

Ring smarts is also mental just as it is technical. But that another thread.

what shot did maidana get hit with?

Was he in adequate fighting condition or not?

If mental strength was not more important than physical he would not have got up fom that shot.

As he was in superb shape.

Lets look at ortiz v maidana, ortiz has all the physical power and strength but had the mentality of a quitter who didn't believe in himself. All his physical strengths couldn't win him that fight because he wasn't mentally strong enough.

You can have the highest ring IQ with shitty athletic ability and just not make it...

Now on the other hand we've seen plenty of raw physical specimens just bulldoze to a championship, now when that physical advantage declines so does their career usually unless they've adapted...

You obviously need more than just one or the other, but a good mentality won't keep you in a fight..

I answered a defective question as best I could.

You are right (now that I've pointed it out for you), ring smarts cannot be filed under 'Mental'. It is bound up with the technical side as well.

But then again the smaller fighter might have advantages in hand speed, relflexes, foot speed and chin ... I guarantee the bigger guy didn't quit because he was beating the smaller guy up ... the smaller guy was giving the bigger guy some problems

Thats a good example, initially Maidana was in their for Ortiz to "roll "over a fighter with a blown up record.

    How that plan backfired.

In this situation we arent talking about people who are out of shape, or old etc.

Easiest way to imagine what i am saying is:

A standard sized man at the WW etc with good mental strength

Or someone who holds physical advantages with no mental strength

U get in shape with physical training ... plus maidana was taking a beating but his POWER came into play in the 10 ... if maidana didn't pack a punch he wouldn't even have 10 wins ... he's a perfect example of making it thru his physical advantages

I would also like to present the jermaine taylor case, technically quite sound, yet as soon he got knocked out, we saw he did not have the mental strength to deal with the knockout. Also case number 2, jeff lacy.

Mental is very importing in boxing however the bigger question should be mental vs technical what is more important.

Which also requires mental strength...push through barriers, etc. When your body wants to give in...

I don't know why this is still being argued. One is pretty much just as important as the other in almost every situation.

Depends, but look at old Tyson.. he still had crazy power with the shittiest mental makeup, but besides the elite heavies he would of still ran through anyone..

But by mental do you mean crazy or reckless, ore just no heart for the fight?

one will be more important to each individual i guess. But in my mind to fight and sustain a career at an elite level you need the mentality.

    For example kelly pavilik. :drink

At an elite level, mentality plays a bigger role...but I wouldn't say because it plays a bigger role at elite level, that it is more important than physical or technical. It evens itself out, you're in the ring with better opposition so said person needs to improve all-round, not just mentally.

True but if they didn't have physical advantages they wouldn't be where they are ... don't get me wrong an edge mentally could be the difference in a fight but that's when their abilities physically are countered with one another ... if one fighter overwhelms another with their physical abilitites then their is a chance that mental abilities might not come into play
