No, at least not in the states. If you had a time machine to go back to 1998 or even 1988, your average red blooded american knew who the champ was at the time. If I went into the bar today and asked 10 random people "Who's the current Heavyweight champ, I would get 7 or 8 different answers, from still Lennox Lewis to Rampage Jackson. :huh My uncle who used to love boxing, still thought the Heavyweight champ was Lennox Lewis, it's obvious to most people like myself, that the Heavyweight division is dead, for many reasons, lack of talent, personality, excitement, postponements, if the Heavyweight division was a car, it would never pass inspection.:-(

No because boxing puts more emphasis on its superstars - the same thing that other mainstream sports do.

I think that the lack of a legit HW champ is the only problem. Boxing has more casual fans and it appeals to diverse crowds.

Go back 10-15 years ago you had the HW division dominating boxing - you had 5 + well known heavyweights and they were fighting each other.

Lennox (mid to late 90's and part of the new mellenium)
    Bowe (early 90's)
    Holyfield (90's)
    Tyson (80's and 90's)
    Michael Moore (briefly 90's)
George Foreman (the lean, mean, grillin machine)
    Tommy Morrison (Rocky Fame)

Since the retirement of Lennox Lewis and even Vitali Klitschko the HW division has been in disaray - which has caused boxing to be on the decline.

But once someone dies in MMA (mainly UFC) then you would see the end of the popularity of the sport.
