What if on the first Saturday of February, boxing held a Superbowl type event. The card would be free to the public and supported solely by advertising, both domestically and internationally. Imagine a card of Pavlik v. Taylor, Calzaghe v. Kessler, PBF v. ODLH, Cotto v. Mosley(Add Klitschko or whoever as needed). If this type of card could become expected one weekend a year, world wide it could raise more money then the Superbowl. (Billion?). Enough to pay the participant fighters ALOT as well as lift the tide of the sport as a whole. Opinions?
Man, I knew I should have titled the thread differently!!! This is a pro-boxing thread. Not bashing....
i would watch it without a doubt. Fact of the matter is, boxing NEEDS to start showing some free events that get HYPE, and have GOOD fighters. Weather this means some boxers will have to bite the bullet, who cares....its for the good of the sport
They need free network coverage. They could still make their fortunes. Easily. Guys like Floyd, Hatton, Pavlik, Cotto, Klitschko etc can make the sport popular again.
Agree. However, fighters that are elite enough to be in this event deserve to be paid well and in-order to make the "Superbowl of Boxing" happen, as PBF says, "If it don't make dollars, it don't make sense." In other words if all participants don't make money there is no incentive for change.
Let the promoters and sanctioning bodies:deal who sell crap fights and who don't get punched in the face take a loss for the betterment of the sport.
Yeah, he is making boxing his little playground and clogging the pipelines of potential fights. He's starting to **** me off. His move is still better then RJJ vs Tito. that fight has NO value!!
Exactly! I think with the proper exposure, boxing could make a public comeback, the people would know the fighters again, and the money would roll in even more. Hell, make all of the events free on TV. Commercials will cost a fortune for big fights. I think that if the people can get to know the fighters again like they did Ali and Tyson, the sport will become more public and more profitable. Win-win.
well if you did this then you've essentially taken out some of the best fights of the year from the money making pool. I've always been partial to showing one decent card every 3 months on ABC or NBC etc showcasing a young figher on the rise. Victor Ortiz, Amir Khan types. This way they look real good and people get to know them then they move up to HBO or Showtime where you have to subscribe to the channel, then once you've made a real fan base you get a PPV shot. But this way people will have gotten to see them on the way up and develop into the fighter worthy of PPV. As it is now, only the die hards know most every fighter in the PPV's.
Let the promoter worry about the good of the sport. Let the fighters fight. Well maybe the elite fighters in the "Superbowl of boxing" who have already made thier fortunes should be held to a higher standard (ODLH, PBF, RJJ)
The idea is to make this event the "money making pool". Promote the big names in boxing...Make it mainstream. Maybe, network boxing reviles the superbowl. Khan can broaden his fanbase on FNF.
