Ok there are a lot of Toney fans out there and this isnt to upset them , but the reality is James fought a lot of bums and when he did step up was gifted at least three decisions. These are his middle weight stats. 1. Vs Nunn - clearly being outboxed for 10 rounds , Nunn was tired , got caught , fight over . I have no complaints , its a 12 round right after all. 2. vs Johnson - dropped, cut and out boxed and outfought for large parts of the fight. Most observers had it clear for Johnson. SD for Toney. 3. vs McCallum - Just wasnt close , McCallum did everything Toney did just better. Again it was at least 3 rounds in McCallums favour yet the judges find a draw to allow Toney to keep his title. The rematch wasnt too different yet Toney got a MD. 4. vs Tiberi - Plain and simply one of the most underated robberies in boxing. Tiberi came in with little chance to win , and wasnt a big puncher but out landed Toney 3 - 1 , was deducted a point for a low blow (very poor ref). Tiberi never fought again. After this James fought fighters like Wolfe ??, knocked out in 1 by Jones jr and faded fighters or fighters with padded records. Im not saying James isnt good, but I want the detail of his fights to be known. peace.
Toneys one of my fav fighters, ever. I live in the fantasy world of how great he could have been if he wasn't so lazy. I agree with you, sadly.
If you really did watch the fight then you would know that it was Toney's counter punching and body punching that made Nunn susceptible to the final ko punch Not even close to being true. Reggie had a 4 point lead after the first 3 rounds, but he faded in the fight and allowed Toney to start outworking him. The decision really could of gone either way so it was far from a bad decision It should also be pointed out that Reggie back then was a fine boxer It was close. In terms of boxing ability they were evenly matched but Toney had more power, because he was the naturally bigger man. He also hurt McCallum quite a few times in that fight, but I notice you overlook that fact. Tiberi deserved to get that win. It was a terrible decision Most likely a mando. As a general rule most mandos tend to be sub-par Out of interest have you done a career breakdown for any other fighters?
Nunn, Johnson, and McCallum, at the time Toney fought them, were awesome fighters. Each of those wins at MW were greater than any of Hopkins, Jones, Taylor, Pavlik individual wins at MW. The fact that Toney struggled and eeked out victories in those fights is more so a testament to their quality than a lack of in James. Blowing a guy out right away can mean that guy wasn't all that to begin with. Beating fighters who are passed their prime or years away from reaching it, should make you question that champion's qualities more so.
great fighter but unless he is referring to Two Ton Tony Galento he should stop saying he is old school while using steroids and being overweight
Toney beat Nunn, who was without question THE man at middleweight. He was overawed early on, but started making serious inroads from about the 7th round onwards. Very impressive victory. To fight the dangerous Johnson as a first title defence says a lot about his 'no fear' mentality back then. Reggie was a very good boxer and certainly no easy mark. Tough first defence. You'd think after two hard fights, he'd go for a soft touch. Nope, he fights one of the most avoided guys in the entire era. Of course these fights were close...these were very good opponents. The Tiberi fight was indeed a disgrace, but even so, beating Nunn, Johnson and drawing with McCallum is impressive.
it's purely a fact of technical skill..... and nunn was a very good fighter.... now the bias was for nunn going into that fight.... but toney showed himself to be one of the greatest counter punchers of all time.... he's a pure technician.... now dedication, professionalism is a whole other issue.... toney're brilliance can not be denied.... plus a lot of guys didn't want to fight toney period. his peers all regarded him as the best fighter, and it was said.... don't do this revisionist bull****.... it's like calling roy jones a bum because he's been ko'd 10 times.... it's moronic.
this is why you a moron.... cos you've obviously watched the telecast of the fight.... with commentators who showed clear bias toward nunn nunn's only effective punch in the fight was his jab.... which toney countered with big right hands throughout the fight.... nunn did his best ali impression talking ****, and jabbing on the back foot.... but toney landed savage right hands throughout.... i'd say he landed all the big punches round 1 through to the stoppage.... nunn jabbed well, but he was the bigger guy...
