Jim Jeffries was an early version of George Chuvalo who relied on his durability to win and broke down his oponents by absorbing their punches.
The thing that made me in a way dislike the hands of stone book i used to have in my avatar is that it told too many myths and the author doesnt imply some of them are most probably not true, real fairy tale stuff some of them, and the author just tells it. The horse story has a lot of different versions in that book. However, here is one that i really hope is true, but maybe not. It goes something like this, when Duran was about 17 he picks this grl up, he's walking home with her when these guys approach him and start giving him ****, tryin to make a show of him in front of her and all. Anyway, a fight starts, he gets nasty with them, they're on him buthe takes two of them out, there's two left, he knocks one of them cold. This is the best part, the book tells it something along these lines- Duran gets up close with the last guy, and then he speaks the words that every man wishes to never hear from Roberto Duran 'it's just me and you now'. As much as it sounds 'fairytale', i luv that one, i believe it just because i want to!
I agree with practically every single point in your post. :thumbsup I'd also like to add, Moorer only got the decision because of some very strange and controversial scoring (one of the judges scored the KD round even - WTF?? :huh). I thought Holyfield won that fight.
I think only the most armchair of armchair fans think that's the ko punch of Walcott, any1 else who has been thinking that should be banned from ESB Classic for a week!
Tyson would beat anybody if he had Kevin Rooney in his corner.(Like a trainer could make that much difference to someone with Tyson's issue's) Duran wasn't motivated for triple weight champion Wilfred Benitez.(Yet mysteriously was for 13 fight novice Davey Moore) Lennox Lewis had a glass jaw.(Yet was stopped just twice in nearly 50 fights against a large amount of championship calibre opposition) Tony Ayala would've steam rolled Duran.(Unless your name is Thomas Hearns Duran doesn't get steamrolled by anyone, especially an untested kid with a wafer thin resume) Tunney would've been counted out if not for the long count.(It looked to me like he was hurt but okay and had the wits about him to stay down for his full quota of time to aid his recovery. Not his fault Dempsey couldn't remember the rules) Harry Greb couldn't really fight.(Based on a 30 second bit of youtube footage of Greb play-sparring for the camera.Never mind the fact he has probably more wins over HOF fighters than anyone in boxing history)
The Hands of Stone book said that Carlos Eleta send Duran to a remote island to train and that he was in top shape against Benitez.
I never thought Duran would've taken a fighter of Benitez's quality lightly but I have heard people say that he did as an excuse for the loss. Fair enough he took Laing lightly but what self respecting professional could go into a fight with a Benitez not focused, fit or motivated, which is why I've never bought this excuse. Benitez was simply better on the night and deserves full credit for a great win imo.
The fight description against Graves on boxrec (who was a legitimate top 5 contender or so, keep in mind) seems to indicate that a considerable amount of action or so took place in the third round of that fight. But, then again, Pep did have over 240 pro fights, and it's tough to keep track of every single moment that took place against every opponent if that's the case. Since he did fight a number of times in Minneapolis that year, it strikes me as quite possible that he might have done something like not throw...or "land" a punch and still win the round against a lesser known opponent, yet somehow transfer that achievement to the better known and regarded Graves.
I think that there are two different Alis, and the post Parkinson's Ali is actually far nicer. Hey...maturity happens, sometime.
Jim Jeffries was an early version of a Heavyweight Willie Pep he rarely had a punch land on him .The few times he was marked up in fights was because the huge opponents ,[who were all in their prime],that he fought all had loaded gloves.Jeffries could run a mile in 3 minutes, carry a bull moose 20 miles on his back, once lifted a train off a man,and had extraordinary reflexes and defensive skills. Jeffries only retired because he was so very fond of Negroes that he did not want to beat them in the ring, when he came back to boxing weighing 400lbs he only had 2 weeks to train for the fight with Johnson..The powers that be did not want a White Champion on the throne because Johnson was such a" Yes Massa ",subservient Black they enjoyed his reign, consequently poor old Jeff was drugged before the fight, but was still well in front when he was hit with a poisoned dart and went into a coma.He repeatedly challenged Johnson to meet him again ,but the wily Johnson ,knowing how close he had come to defeat avoided him like the White Plague.
