Unlike many modern refs, he didn't panic and stop the Zhanibek-Butler fight prematurely. He let the action continue and allowed the fighters to decide the outcome. As it should be. I wish more modern refs would follow this example. Boxing would be so much better if refs didn't rob the fighters of their opportunity to have a full and complete chance, and the fans of the action they paid to see. Bravo, Jack Reiss. Boxing needs more refs like this, and less like Tony Weeks, or that British ref who stops fights for no reason.
My son and I call Reiss "Shovey McGee" because of his habit of shoving the fighters back when he breaks a clinch. That being said, we are always to hear he is refereeing a big fight. Reiss stays calm, doesn't put up with any nonsense and gives fighters time to work themselves out of a clinch before he breaks them up.
Reiss's refering in Fury Wilder 1 was top class. Barely in camera shot half the time didn't know he was there in till he was making sure the god of war was ready to continue. Unlike Bayless in the 2nd fight who was all over the shop. Think the occasion got to Mora in the 3rd fight a bit clearly feeling the pressure but wasn't the worst job.
Reiss on average does really well. But he should have stopped the Akh fight after the second knockdown as Butler was done. I can understand and appreciate his reasoning for giving Butler every opportunity on his big night but he was clearly done.
I think we also need another Mills Lane while on the subject. Him having the guts to break apart Tyson and Holyfield multiple times is really something as most normal referees would never step between two giant-sized, superhumans going at it.
He's also a bit of a mid-fight talker. If the fight is ongoing I think the ref should only ever say break or stop, but Reiss goes off on these speeches like "one of you is holding and the other is holding his arm in place now if you don't stop it I'm going to call a break and maybe take a point so you let his arm go and you stop putting your arm there and we'll try to have a good fight ok?" That has to be hard to process while you're in the middle of a fight.
You are so right. I never thought about the processing part. They should be thinking, "Shut up, dude. I'm trying to work here."
Yeah, it's the corner's job to stop the fight as well, so if the ref wants to let it go too long for the corner's liking, they can do it. It's rare they can't do that in time.
To me that shows exactly why he's such a great referee. He let the fighters settle matters with their fists, as it should be.
I agree Jack Reiss puts some of these other 'boxing referees' to shame. A competent referee is so refreshing.
