I'd take it several steps further. I know it would never happen, but we need a big fight to air on free tv. Make it a big deal, an extravaganza to draw in new viewers. It would need to be promoted thoroughly and properly. Boxing is a niche sport now. And the more it goes to ppv, the more isolated it gets. Its a downward, self perpetuating spiral. It needs a shake up. Side note......I like the World Series of Boxing, or at least the idea of it. It needs a real outlet, as opposed to Versus, but it is a start. At least it is trying to engage in something larger than just weight/belt/sanctioning body bull****. It aspires to more.
Boxng needs to be cheaper to the TV companies so it can become more popular again. It needs the big fights to happen and the heavyweight division needs to become more competitive.
Tag team boxing is their only hope Vitali and wlad vs Haye and Ademik PAC and Kahn vs floyd and berto Direll and ward vs Frotch and AA Yes!!!!! I'm a genius I tell you.....
-Top guys need to fight eachother -Go back to 8 weight classes -Get rid of ABC belts or set up mandatory unifications -Network television needs to air it -PPV only for the most important bouts -Showtime and HBO need to stop this "my fighter/our fighter" bull**** which prevents top matchups.
It needs Pacquaio vs Mayweather to happen, and maybe more importantly, it needs another recognisable, great - and lets face facts, probably American - heavyweight to come along and clean the division up.
-fighters like Brian Magee should not be approved for Bute and fighters like Jorge Solis should not be approved for Gamboa -related to the above, in-house fighting -go back to 8 divisions, not 17 -if the belts don't mean ****, than the media needs to stop acting like they do -top 25 fighters should fight 3 times a year rather than 2 realistically and immediate, though: -Mayweather vs. Pacquiao -one of the Klitschko's being in the Upset, KO, Round, or Fight of the Year -best fight the best in the most talented divisions: 118, 140, 168, 175 -related to the above, more events like the Super Six and bantamweight tourney
So far, these are the best ideas we've seen. They're so logical, but realistically, what needs to be done so some of these things can actually happen?
These are all great ideas. But I don't think they would draw in new fans, although they would appease a lot of the current hardcore and casual fans. To me, the biggest problem boxing has is that one has to almost always go looking for it to find it. Now, being from NY, I can flick on the tv and probably get a boxing program such as Broadway Boxing or ESPN Classic fights or something. But, its reruns, and while it might appeal to me, it won't appeal to a regular Joe for the most part. It's history. People want to feel a part of history, to watch that big fight and say were they were when they watched it live. Everyone remembers where they were when they watched Tyson get KOd by Douglass. But who remembers where they were when they watched a replay of Hagler Hearns? To get people watching it needs to be accessible. And exciting.
Showtime needs to step it up and boxer needs to be expose in regular tv. That part is done. Showtime already been steping it up with super 6 and capitalizing in the deep lower weight classes. HBO needs to stop giving power to only one promotion. Specially one that can't creat new stars. Seems like other promoters stop giving a dame in developing stars cause a bigger promiton will take over anyways. There are two ways to creat stars. 1 by haveing a young lion beat one of the super stars. Boxing is running out of stars latley so networks just need to have some good fighter fight each other wait till the dust clear, and who ever is left is bound to be a draw.
Boxing needs good match ups, that's all!! Doesn't matter what belts there are!! As long the best fight each other, the sport is superior!!
pac v mayweather to fight in their prime. boxings needs an injection of life and this is the one true super fight that will do it. more tv exposure and all that jazz etc is needed but just make this fight please
