Bear with me guys few questions for seasoned boxing fans - am a football man always have been used to love the boxing when i was in my early teens - and you had Eubank V Benn, Watson V Eubank, Benn V Mclleland etc...... Never really took more than a passing interest in it until a couple years ago when Ricky Hatton ignited my interest - before he was found out as a boxer - my mates are just casual boxing fans like watching the big fights world title fights etc - now i am hooked i will watch any boxing match - no matter what level and have enjoyed reading up on the internet the recent history of Boxers like James Toney, B-Hop Roy Jnr Jnr etc I am now a fully fledged boxing man and would just like to know a few things that seem to have changed since i used to watch please excuse my ignorance on such matters as ave asked around mates pub etc and no1 really seems to know...... Why no standing 8 count anymore? Why no 10/10 rounds.... And when boxers kill themselfs to make weight is there any restrictions on how they lose the weight - have they to weigh in weekly for health reasons to make sure they lose weight gradually or can they just starve themself for the last week before weigh in??? And after they weigh in is there any restrictions on how much weight they put on before the fight - ave heard people say Hatton has went into the ring up to 2 stone heavier than what he was at weigh in surely thats a form of cheating... Thanks in advance if anyone can help me wirth these questions
well my friend ill try and help you out some boxing organistations/countries still do a standing 8 count, boxers do have to do pre fight weigh ins,and there is no restrictions on how much weight a fitter can put on after the weigh in hatton for eg weighs in at 140and on average will weight around 154 on the night and there are 10/10 rounds
Cheers mate - 154 on fight night quite frankly i reckon thats shocking thats 2 weight classes up (i think) Havent noticed a standing 8 count in a while just refs stepping in to stop fights when a standing 8 count would give a fighter time to recover as he is still on his feet Thanks clears a few things up for me
"Why no 10/10 rounds...." 10/10 rounds are still in the rules. If it's a close round and neither fighter deserved to win, the judges should award a 10/10 round. It just seems to rarely happen. Maybe judges feel like they have to award the round to a fighter.
"And after they weigh in is there any restrictions on how much weight they put on before the fight - ave heard people say Hatton has went into the ring up to 2 stone heavier than what he was at weigh in surely thats a form of cheating..." "154 on fight night quite frankly i reckon thats shocking thats 2 weight classes up (i think)" It came about because they did away with same day weigh-ins. Apparently it's dangerous to the fighter's health, so they opted for a weigh-in the day before. Stopped a lot of deaths apparently, due to fighters no longer needing to bust a nut on fight day to lose weight. On the flip side, as you point out, fighters can then spend the next 24 hours putting on as much weight as possible. I don't believe there's a legal limit. Cheating? I'm not sure. It's in the rules so it's not exactly cheating. There needs to be a happy medium. Not sure what it is though.
There are some jurisdictions that put a limit on the weight that can be gained over night, though I don't think it's that common. Not sure how it works, either... 10%, 12%?
