...is it automatically a good thing or do the match up matter as well? Also it's worth noting shows have been free in Japan and Thailand for a while... Albeit to very different standards and frequency...
I value any quality free boxing that airs here in the UK. ESPN Friday Night Fights for example, domestic events on Channel 5 and I believe ITV, one of the main UK free to air channels, is also about to step back into the game. I feel it's a good thing, so long as the programming itself is good quality. The exposure is much needed.
Exposure is what boxing needs. In Britain TV is flooded with soccer, so kids see this and want to play soccer. If boxing is all over the TV screens, kids may start taking an interest in boxing instead. Makes it more mainstream
In a lot of countries you could watch boxing for free already. Difference is now you can see world class boxers fight again without having a premium cable subscription and/or paying an additional fee in the US as well. It's what destroyed boxing in the first place. But... now that it's back in the US, there's still a lot of concern. Seems like Haymon figured, that if he's going to show quality fighters from the Americas, he's not going to get the fun spoiled by seeing them get pasted by some quality Asian, Cuban, European or Russian type fighter. It's going to be some sort of open Americana championships, with the open part only for not too dangerous overseas fighters.
Andy Lee has already been put on the second NBC card. I would hope Haymon would use his good non-American boxers too, it would be a complete waste of talent when he's got guys like Lara, Khan and Maidana.
It would appear that almost half of Haymons fights arent American. Hes definitely trying to appeal to foreign fans
Stevenson did the exact same thing when he fought Dawson. Stevenson probably wasn't even ranked in the top 10 at SMW when he went up and KO'd Dawson. Gotta take your chances when you get them
