So, Tye Fields is fighting on Versus tonight, and the announcers are already posing the question, "Can he be the next American heavyweight champion?" Are they serious? He's fighting a guy that's 12-6 tonight, which has been the story of his career. But they say, "He's just being brought along slowly." I'm sorry, but he's been boxing since 1999 and is 32. This isn't being brought along this slowly. It's called not being brought along at all.
His original opponent had to pull out. This opponent is like a last minute substitute. Fields has already beaten better opponents.
I've been following Tye Fields since early 2003, and he's fought absolutely no one of merit since then. He always faces garbage opponents. Sherman Wiliams is probably the best fighter he's ever faced, and that says something.
Williams and Montana were okay but nobody who makes me say, "hey, that Fields guy might really do something". Rumor has it TF will fight Hasim Rahman in the fight following this one. Fields has improved a lot but considering when he started he fought like a pissed off basketball player there was plenty of room for improvement. Besides, he's not like Povetkin who had a huge amatuer career but the time has come to push forward or get out all together.
I'd like to see him fight Rahman. I'd respect him for that...even though Rahman is a fat, lazy blob these days (his fight with Sykes was downright sad). Still, it's a step up. Tye Fields isn't getting any younger.
Clottey boxed really well in the 5th. good head movement and angles footwork was not the best but still, boxed really well.
Flores fazed Clottey with a good left in the sixth, and he's been hurting Clottey to the body. Clottey is still in control of the fight, but Flores brought it tonight. I don't think Clottey likes those body shots tonight, and from what I've seen with his inside work, I think Cotto would cut him to pieces to the ribs.
Clottey gets the win in what turned out to be a darn good fight and probably much tougher than he thought.
I was getting a drink so I didn't get the numbers, but I suspect it was probably 8 rounds to 2 for Clottey on most cards, or something very close to that.
Missed Clottey's fight; thought he'd be headlining. How the **** is this underwhelming Fields guy a bigger draw?
If you're not watching, don't bother. It's probably the worst fight I've ever seen. Tye Field's opponent had something like 28 punches thrown after 4 or 5 rounds. And Fields, who basically has target practice on a guy standing still and not throwing punches, has managed a whopping 20 percent landed. If Floyd Mayweather fought an opponent like this, he'd have about a 95 percent land rate.
