I was thinking about Heavyweight Title bouts, sorry. Sept 28, 1915. Ted (Kid) Lewis outpointed Jack Britton for the welterweight 12 round title fight at that Atlas Athletic Club in Boston. The ref was Dan Lane and the 2 Judges were Bill Hamilton ans J.S. Sprago. This is known as the first fight in America using judges. Note: Ring Record Book has that bout as a referees decision BUT they have been wrong before.
Actually the 1st heavyweight bout took place between Herbert Maori Slade and Jem Mace on February 2, 1883, BUT I think you meant heavyweight title bout. What other 1st happened in the Willard/Moran bout?
Here's the questions that are still unanswered: 1. Who fought in the 1st bout that the ring announcer announced the scores? 2. When was the 1st time both the mandatory 8 count rule and 3 knockdowns in 1 round terminating the bout was used in a Championship match? Who were the boxers? 3. Besides being the first Heavyweight title fight at Madison Square Garden, what other 1st happened in the Willard/Moran bout in 1916?
