anybody ever see fights, especially old ones where the ring announcer will say the last name of the fighter twice? eg. "Sugar...Ray...Robinson.......Robinson" ive always wondered what the hell that was all about.
I like the one's who have a crappy phrase since "Let's get ready to rumble" is copyrighted. I was at an event, and the announcer said "Ladies and gentleman...CAN YOU DIG IT?" Almost soiled myself over that one.
Im guessing if you didnt hear it the first time, maybe you will catch it the second time around. I think the noise in the some of the venues were to blame, and there was wasnt speakers all around to amplify the sound like there is today.
incidentally i saw roy jones fight once and the announcer said: 'roy...jones...junior.........junior' that made me chuckle a bit. yeah im a dork. so what.
I was wondering the same thing. It sounds silly. Another interesting thing about announcing is the evolution of Buffer's "Let's get ready to rumble". He used to do stretch it out into a really long sentence ("Let's get ready to rumbbbbbllllllle twelve rounds for the...") until he realized how much better it sounded by itself.
The guy that repeated the last name of the fighters was the legendary Johnnie Addie. He was a fixture at MSG for many years. I guess he repeated it to insure all could hear it. The sound systems in those days were not as todays.
I watched a tua fight once and he was announced as David tua...TUA. Thought I was hearing things but obviously not. May have been Tua Ibeaubuchi?
the best is when Buffer has a fighter who is undefeated and he will say "his record; a perfect one" I love that
in some of the really old fights, the announcer did not even have a mic, he just stood in the middle of the ring and shouted... i think definitely in that case, it was important to say the last name a couple times the old yankees pa announcer used to do the same thing (saying the last name twice)
