Thinking about buying a pair of boxing shoes but I want to know do the shoes really make a difference in boxing? I currently wear a pair of Nike Hurache basketball sneakers (which are great for ball) but I'm considering grabbing a pair of Rival or Nike boxing shoes. Let me know what you guys think.
Short answer: Yes. Rivals aren't available locally, where I am. But, I know a few coaches and boxers who like their Nikes. Bear in mind how you fight and how you are built, when choosing your boot. Some have more support than others, but less flexibility. Still others have more grip, but a harder sole. Then, there's weight - leather lasts longer, but weighs considerably more than boots constructed from fabric. From what I've read, Rivals are heavier than other brands. The best boot should feel like a sock - anything but clunky and molded to your feet. You don't want blisters! When I'm out of town and don't have mine with me, I make do with Onitsuka Tigers Mexico 66s. At the very least, they fit like a glove, weigh almost nothing, and they aren't stiff. There are some bozos at my gym that show up for practice in massive skateboarding or street shoes. Ten minutes into footwork, they're getting tired. Half an hour later, someone has a twisted ankle/blister/etc. What did they expect...
Boxing boots are FAR superior for training purposes. It is also worth considering doing some of your work bare foot.
Trainers are designed to absorb shock and vibrations, where boxing shoes are build for immediate contact with the ground and you need that if you want to build sharp skills. Boxing shoes round off any unnecessary sole from the foot, you can roll your foot around about.
Boxing boots are vital. Trainers offer no sport specific support. You want a boot that takes the shape of your foot and allows you to pivot correctly. You don't want your foot moving around inside your trainer ****ing up your steps and pivots. In boxing you should want to feel border line naked for comfort and technique. I mean no big shorts, headguard, gloves, groin guard, boots etc No lie, I think Mosley looked much more comfortable and better when he stopped wearing trousers and started wearing normal shorts.
