When I think of all of the decisions over the past 25 years or so...both the good and the bad ones, the 15 rd limit would answer alot of unanswered or incompletely answered questions.
i have always heard the real reason was not the duk koo kim tragedy, but it was about money! 12 round fights fit into the television time slots better. a fighter can die just as easily in a 12 round fight.
Science proved that permanent damage usually occurs after the 12/13th round. I never heard bout this television issue.
No way.. It would be even more boring honestly. I couldn't stand to watch a 15 round title fight. 12 rounds is perfect. And 15 rounds of punishment can really add up to the damage in your brain.
We debate this basicly every month.. 15 rounds would mean more long lasting injuries.. Again.. Imagine if Vitali-Briggs had 15 rounds..
Damn, just shows how amazing fighters were back then. sal sanchez comes to mind. Dude looked like he went for a walk in the park after the 15th round
So they could fit the intros, commercials, interviews, etc...nicely into an hour spot back when boxing was on network TV? And then use fighter safety as a smokescreen for more financial motives? Actually I don't know. It's just a rather popular theory I hear among fans who were into boxing back then. Likewise, I take the middle road on the weigh-in debate. I'll say that BOTH the Mancini-Kim tragedy and the money lost from the aborted Spinks-Muhammad rematch led to the change, rather than one or the other.
What science studies have proven that? Damage comes from all sorts of ways, repetitive trauma from sparring and competitive fights, blood clots in fights that went less than 12, sometimes even from relatively short bouts. The list of ring deaths shows that most ring deaths did not occur from rounds 12-15. It happened of course, but it's not easy to predict what kind of damage comes from exactly how much trauma and how long the fights are because everyone's brain is different.
Why leave it at 15, why not 20 rounds or 45. Nah sod having rounds, have them coming up to 'the scratch' last man standing wins. 12 rounds is fine, increasing number of rounds is not going to be in favour of the sponsors, TV etc, someone will die just by nature of any combat sport, probably nothing to do with doing 15 rounds but will be used by the abolitionists.
boxers still die from 12 round boxing these day. 12 round boxing benefits some types of fighters like khan or broner. 15 round benefits other types like rios or margarito.
The tragedies happen all over the place in terms of rounds, location, weights, etc.. 3. Fatal Round 3a. General The Data document 1,355 deaths since 1890. Of these deaths, 125 (9.2%) occurred during training or as the result of medical misadventure, and 1,230 (90.7%) occurred as the direct result of ring injuries. Last round is shown for 918 ring deaths (918/1,105, 83%). 3b. Professional Boxers Excluding training deaths, The Data document 923 professional boxing deaths since 1890. The round in which the fatal fight ended is listed for 744 of those deaths (744/923, 80%). Table 6 summarizes pro deaths by round. Table 6 Round Deaths 1- 45 2- 62 3- 54 4- 82 5- 49 6- 95 7- 46 8- 71 9- 44 10- 92 11- 13 12- 35 13- 10 14- 10 15- 13 16- 9 >16- 14 Although recent world championship matches usually ended during the second, fifth, or ninth round [EN11], Table 6 shows that death from ring injuries is most likely to occur during the fourth, sixth, eighth, tenth, and twelfth rounds. The relative scarcity of deaths after 12 rounds suggests that the reason why boxing organizations no longer schedule 15-round fights is that shorter fights better fit hour-long television broadcasting schedules. http://ejmas.com/jcs/jcsart_svinth_a_0700.htm
