Where's the distribution on the front Leg or back leg? notice how the shoulders are pulled forward almost parallel with their knees.using what Mike Tyson calls putting out the cigarette punch, yeah the back leg is used but the distribution is still forward he certainly not standing up straight wouldn't you agree? His punch appears short the elbow does not appear fully extended.and there is full rotational force behind that punch.
All distribution comes of the back leg, thats your distance. Depends where it is and the knee, where your range is.
scrap today it's all about rotational force I'm not turning my weight over my front foot, so the ACL will never be torn! What I teach is to put your weight forward bending the knees and pushing upwards. Don't push your body's weight over the front knee. This was Cooney's short left hook, many other greats threw it the same way including Frazier, Tua. And Dempsey. It's a push don't let your shoulder hit your chin.
Well that's how it's taught today it's actually goes as far back as the 1960's. The idea is to keep the elbows in a close. 1. Weight on the front foot. 2. Bend the knees. 3. Push off the front foot without transferring weight in-front of fists. As I say don't let the shoulder touch your face. No torn ACL! 4. Let the elbow travel up the body an 1-2 inches nothing more and curl the wrist in. As I say the result should look like a hockey stick. I use to watch Gerry Cooney do this punch in front of the mirror for 3 rounds a day.
Scrap joe Frazier threw the left hook off the front it's called the high low, the reason why you bend the front leg is to get and to keep the head down, pushing off the front leg, if you fire off the hook from the back leg the head will pop back up and you'll get hit coming back up. This was the whole joe Frazier DEFENSE against Ali. I remember we brought one our fighters to Cus's gym to spar with young MIke Tyson and I can hear Cus to this day telling Tyson to keep his head down when coming up with the left hook. Keep your head down! And the easiest way to keeping it down is by pushing off the front leg. As far Cooney goes YES he did throw the LH that way what I forgot to add was when pushing the front leg throwing the hook move your body toward the chin using power generated from the sides. As far as Cooney goes I was right there to watch him do it. True story!!!
Odd that on the Classic board you talked about Frazier keeping weight on the back foot because of the "Philly Shell".
When you're on the inside keep the weight on the front.what I'm saying is that there was two Joe Frazier's. The first Joe thought that he could cast his weight onto his rear leg to evade the right-hand the problem what he learned doing that is very risky because if your opponent throws a double right-hand you're going to get hit. that back leg is dangerous and risky defense is like if you keep bringing that hand-down you will get hit especially if the other guy throws more than one right hand or if his jab gets through. the other big problem with falling on the back leg Is that you can get hit in the back.not only that but the body is wide open. The idea is to get inside and stay off that imaginary line keeping it close you can take punches away and block. And also when you're on the front leg you're much closer to the target then if you were on the back leg.
