Reading one of the recent threads on here it occured to me that some of our more younger posters, or even more recent converts to boxing, may have heard a name but may not have seen any of their fights...

So, I thought I'd see how this idea develops... Hope no-one thinks I'm being "full of myself"...

Patterson was the first man ever to regain the Heavyweight title after losing it. In June 1959 he lost to Ingemar Johansson but almost a year to the day later made history... We are led to believe that Patterson was so embarrassed by his performance in the first fight that he left the arena in disguise...

In March, 1961, they met for the third and final time...

Patterson is, sadly, probably more known for his two devestating losses to Sonny Liston...

He also fought in a match that, in all likeyhood, wouldn't be sanctioned today against Pete Rademacher who was making his debut in a World Title Fight...

Class fighter- a lot better h2h then legacy. I think he was very creative and could punch lovely. Very exciting to watch. Would have had a great chance against any non-super heavy.

Would have been the greatest light-heavyweight of all time... If someone remembers that quote he gave about being famous for just 5 minutes at Heavyweight than a lifetime at light-heavy please post it! One of my favourite quotes in boxing history...

I think the disguise story comes from the first Liston fight, Lee.

:good Top man, I thought as his light heavyweight potential was being discussed, a fight against a top notch light heavy (and a decent Cruiser/small Heavy) would be a good contribution.

I'm off work sick today, laying in bed with cold/flu. Good thread that has cheered me up.

Patterson didn't have the most stern of jaws, but unless you caught him early he was fairly stable. Killer left hook, fast hands and a lot of heart, I'd be interested to see how other posters rate his chances against ATG light heavys.

    Does it really????

Was the Johannson fight the one where he looked up and saw John Wayne steering at him? :huh
