Handsome sod. Irish heavy. Comes to London. Darling of society. Shags society beauties. A few decent wins. Fights in front of vast crowds in the 30s. Goes to Hollywood. Befriends Gable, Errol Flynn etc. Also wonderful singer. Earns, by standards of the day, huge sums singing on tours of Britain. Marries Movita (glamourous film chick later Marlon Brando's wife. But has drink problem. Slowly pisses a considerable fortune away, winds up living in doss houses in Paddington. Dies penniless. When in prime, gave a young kid money to go back to Ireland to see his folks. Thinks nothing of it. After death, the lad hears of jack's plight, arranges for the body to be flown back to Cobh near Cork where the old boy is given a near state funeral. If that does not make a film, I don't know what does.

There's a book out by Kevin Mitchell about just that subject called War Baby.
Would make an interesting film.

max schmelling`s story is almost unbelievable in it`s intensity.got his autobiography when it came out in english and that dude has some brass bollocks!like hiding jews on his mink farm and risking certain execution if he was caught.stedfastly refusing to dump his jewish manager and pissing hitler right off in the process.
i think the best film would be about victorian bareknuckler jem mace.in an age where people didn`t really travel outside their own town he was galivanting all over the world fighting the best australia and the americas could throw at him.apart from the aborted sayers/heenan fight he was the first true "world "champion and reading about the ups and downs of his life are fascinating

i can see it on screen as sort of in the same style as gangs of new york.mace actually fought in the five points once but the fight had to be abandoned as there were the seconds for his opponent standing by the ropes with lead pipes waiting for mace to come close enough to them to let him have it!
