Wow, did it really call Liston a "brawler" ? If it I had to pigeon-hole him into one of the common generic "styles", I would have thought he's the archetypal "boxer-puncher".
I always found it interesting...that whenever you have two brothers that are boxers ...they almost never have the same style ....
Amen to that question. Anyone who wants to win most of their bets had better take styles to heart. You can call a pressure fighter a swarmer, an inside specialist, or any other term you prefer, but the general style needs to be understood. It's the same for the other styles, call them what you will. Do all Pressure fighters fight exactly the same way, or have exactly the same attributes? Of course not. And there are Hybrids, who can change styles somewhat. But the general term still applies. Send any pressure fighter into the ring with prime George Foreman and see what happens to him. George was a top notch slugger/puncher. No pure pressure fighter that I've ever seen would have survived with George.
I'm sure I'm not the only person on this forum who lived through the Ali, Foreman, Frazier, Norton era. Okay. Ali fights Frazier and it's life and death and long brutal fights every time. Ali fights Norton and it's the same, life and death, long, brutal fights. Foreman fights Frazier. Foreman beats him almost as soon as the fight starts, or it soon becomes obvious that Frazier has no chance. Foreman fights Norton and it's the same as with Frazier, Bang, Boom, Norton is gone. Now comes Ali vs. Foreman. If you lived through that time, you know that most looked at that and very reasonably deduced that Foreman would win rather easily. I bet HEAVILY on Ali and made a lot of money. And why was that?
A lot of this theory seems to have been invented to describe what played out between Ali, Foreman, and Frazier. A lot of future boxers learned from them, so it remains relevant sometimes. In most fights one boxer is better at everything and will win regardless of style, but in even matchups between archetypal styles it's worth considering.
I've been reading the posts, and, hopefully learning. I just want to share some personal thoughts and speculations, in this thread, on styles. I would like to propose the idea that there may be 6 basic styles. I'll list them... 1. Slugger (Puncher). One Example: George Foreman. 2. Boxer (Out-fighter). One Example: Muhammad Ali. 3. Swarmer (In-Fighter). One Example: Joe Frazier. 4. Boxer-Slugger. One Example: Lennox Lewis. 5. Boxer-Swarmer. One Example: Evander Holyfield. 6. Slugger-Swarmer. One Example: Mike Tyson. Your thoughts?
