Let's define and discuss all the major boxing styles and schools of thoughts around the sweet science - I am really digging in Cuban and Soviet boxing styles right now and have already caught significant differences between Russian and Ukrainian specifications. Let's discuss the topic here - by the way, I am a relatively new fan of boxing and that is my first post on the forum! Hello pugilism lovers!
Welcome Tommy. Being a new ESB poster, there are a few things to note. 1- America is corrupt and forgien fighters never get a fair shake. 2- EE boxers are the best on the planet, but never reach their potential due to #1. 3- Fanboyism is a real thing. 4- if you critisiize a fighter, you may be labled a racist or YDKSAB. 5- Every close fight is a blatant robbery. Other than that, welcome, have fun, be objective and speak your mind. There are some very knowledgeable posters on this site and there are some very good dudes that frequent ESB.
Major Styles... BOXER. This one likes to stay at range and work behind the jab. Speed is great with this style. So are cute tricks, i.e. like the shoulder roll. Some Heavyweight Champions who used this style are Jack Johnson, Muhammad Ali, and Larry Holmes. They usually do better than expected against Sluggers. SLUGGER. This one likes to also stay at range, sometimes still behind the jab and sometimes not. Power punching is great with this style. So is strength, i.e. like the push back and then lower the boom! Some Heavyweight Champions who used this style are Max Baer, Charles Sonny Liston, and George Foreman. They usually do well against Swarmers. SWARMER. This one likes to get in fairly close and bang away at constantly. Good Stamina is great with this style. So is crouching, i.e. like head movement in very close, with pressure and punching at whatever is available to hit. Some Heavyweight Champions who used this style are Tommy Burns, Rocky Marciano, and Joe Frazier. They usually do well against Boxers. BOXER-PUNCHER. This one can use some or all of the three styles above. Knowing which style to use when is great for this adaptable style of fighting. So is ring generalship, i.e. like controlling the distance, depending on which mix of styles being used. Some Heavyweight Champions who used this style are Joe Louis, Evander Holyfield, and Lennox Lewis. They usually do well against most other styles. There are obviously a lot of variables and crossover among fighters. And it is sometimes not wise to totally pigeon-hole a particular fighter. And there is Counter Punching and Hybrids to also consider along with the various styles. And many fighters adopt a different style as they age.
