Imagine if boxing had an annual day long supershow like the Super Bowl where 8 fights took place in the original 8 weight classes (heavyweight, light heavyweight, middleweight, welterweight, lightweight, featherweight, bantamweight and flyweight) and they was the biggest fights that could be made in that particular division....which 8 matches would you book on the show if anyone would fight anyone (I know the chances of it happening are zero but its a bit of fantasy booking). Here would be mine: Heavyweight: Wladmir Klitschko vs. Vitali Klitschko Top 2 dogs in the heavyweight division (unless Adamek can prove otherwise) with the added intrigue of them being brothers. Light Heavyweight: Bernard Hopkins vs. Lucian Bute Quite a hard one to choose. Hopkins is the undoubted top dog in the light heavyweight/ super middleweight divisions, so I went with him. His opponent was a bit more of a difficult choice. There is no point in a rematch with Pascal. I imagine Hopkins vs Dawson would be a snooze fest. Travious cloud isn't marketable enough. At super middle I think Hopkins v Ward would be even worse than Hopkins-Dawson. In the end I decided it was between Bute and Froch. I went for Bute due to his undefeated record and the chance to avenge countryman Pascals loss so the Canadian fans would buy into it. Middleweight: Sergio Martinez vs. Miguel Cotto Martinez is undoubtley the top fighter in the middleweight/ light middleweight divisions and Cotto is probably the biggest name. Welterweight: Manny Pacquiao vs. Floyd Mayweather Do I really need to explain this one? Lightweight: Juan Manual Marquez vs. Brandon Rios Marquez is the legend at the top of the lightweight rankings. His opponent came down to 3 choices- Rios, Robert Guerrero and Erik Morales. I went with Rios over Guerrero because I think it would be a better fight and Rios is probably a bit better know because of his tasteless impression of Roach. I went with him over Morales as while he put up a good showing against Madiana, that was a light welterweight, he still lost and his last big win came against Pacquiao in 2005. Featherweight: Yuriorkis Gamboa vs. Chris John The top 2 dogs now at featherwight following JuanMa Lopez's lost to Salidio (who Gamboa's already beat). I did consider Gamboa vs. Donaire but I feel having Donaire move up would take away from the bantamweight fight. Bantamweight: Nonito Donaire vs. Abner Mares Donaire was a shoo in. I went with Mares as he did beat Agbeko in the bantamweight final. Nobody seems to care much about Moreno and I think Montiel and Darchinyan was beaten convincingly enough by Donaire that no rematches are required. Flyweight: Pongsaklek Wonjongkam vs. Giovanni Segura The only 2 little guys that get near p4p lists. The only 2 other fighters considered was Roman Gonzalzez and Hernan Marquez but Wonjonkam and Segura have proven more.
A day like this would be awesome... A shame that there is so many federations.. Somebody should buy EVERYTHING! And make ONE fair and unbiased federation, that had one belt per weight class (+ maybe continent championships?), which would mean one champion! The federations should make clear rules about: Ring size, venues, jugdes etc.. And the boxers should fight evenly ranked opposition, so that the best faces the best and prospects have to work their way to the top, by tearing through the ranks! We would all know who truely is the best, no over hyped prospects, no hand picking etc.. Look at me day dreaming lol..
