i just thought of this. imagine if HBO hired someone like gorilla productions to advertise a fight on movie theaters. i just saw the mayweather/mosley preview by GP productions. that would generate more interest if it was shown on movie theaters. and not just that fight but many other upcoming fights. there are so many creative ideas that boxing could come up with but they dont do anything what a dissapointment
Those trailers cost money to run and most movies fall outside of boxing's core demographics. Advertising on SportsCenter reaches the sporting public. Throwing up a trailer before a Disney movie doesn't. More teenagers watch movies than anybody, and they don't control the PPV dollars.
Dude. Why would HBO hire Gorilla? All GP does is use footage that HBO produced themselves to edit together a cool, flashy, sentimental 3-4 minute video. Seriously.
Nice thought, but trailers of upcoming fights have no place in mainstream movie theatres. Like Jeff has pointed out, it will be wasted targeting. I've notice you bash GP several times. You two got beef or something?
I was at the movies today thinking of something similar. I guess the NCAA tourney is gonna be played at the theatre in 3D. What about PPV boxing matches being held in a theatre, tickets would go on sale for like 20 bucks or so pretty reasonable. What do you guys think?
I like the idea. I'm not sure how it'll work over in the US, but here in the UK it will only be a success for fighters as popular as Hatton. Am I correct in thinking Mayweather vs Marquez were shown in theatres? Was that a success?
He does a lot more than you give him credit for. Just compare his work to the shitty WCB and B.A.D. promos you see on HBO.
He's good for a non-trained amateur editor with no experience what so ever, and limited resources. But the bigboys like HBO have people in their team that are far better equipped, have vast amounts of footage and software at their disposal, and can produce some epic promos themselves if they really wanted to. This dude is really good too: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wyKyXKQvA8I
I love Gorilla Promotions. The kid behind his computer editing HBO footage does a wonderful job at it, but I think some people lose focus of what he's actually doing. It's not a team of five jumping in a Delorean and re-filming Gatti vs Ward I from different angles, it's a kid behind his computer downloading 24/7 and juxtaposing the images with a film soundtrack. HBO hiring the guy? ...Stop the nonsense. They have professional editors at hand.
Yeah that does baffle me sometimes. You would think they would make full use of the material they have, and knock up something less cheesy. Take a look at the official promos for Pac/Cotto and Pac/Clottey: [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gK-phtoLfhA[/ame] [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gT43LMSZwIE[/ame] they must have spent no more than 10 minutes to knock those up. :tired
The promo's Showtime have been pulling out of their ass for the Super Six have been nothing short of monumental. HBO need to sit their fat asses down and take notes.
I'm pretty sure these were Top Rank promos, not HBO's. But still..HBO doesn't do a good job of using their resources. The Boxing After Dark promos are generally the cheesiest. I think the problem is the guy(s) editing the videos are not fight fans. More often than not, their promos seemed to be random clips threw together with an instrumental track in the background.
Of course he's editing HBO sourced footage, what else is he supposed to use? You expect him to film the fights himself before attempting to edit them?
