Hey there... I just made an interesting observation. I visited David Haye's Twitter page and noticed he had about 3200 followers or so... The other day when I visited Roy "Big Country" Nelson he had over 13,000 followers... This is not a thread to discuss fighting itself but speaking more towards to obvious... Boxing is going away. fast... I mean I know the hard core boxing fans could answer this, but if you were to ask a co-workers, friend, or relative who a popular young dominant boxer they knew about, who would they name?? Yet I bet most people in an office could rattle off the names of 10+ MMA fighters they like to watch fight... I love BOTH sports and hope Boxing can figure some **** out real quick.. but i think the bottom line is fans need to be introduced to a lot of new young boxers and buy into their story or build an affinity to their boxing style real quick.. Maybe boxing should consider MMA style gloves.. the fights would be a lot shorter, some of the defensive blocking techniques would be rendered a bit useless.. but it would generate buzz and excitement back into the game. It was bare knuckles in the old days anyways. and MMA gloves are already sanctioned so why not... Keep all the boxing rules just change things up a bit. Would anyone else like to see a boxing match using MMA style gloves? Sorry my post was all over the place but I just let the thoughts flow forth.
It would change the style back more to what it would have been like back in the days of smaller or no gloves. Lower hands due to the effectiveness of body shots. Personally I am fine with how boxing gloves are now.
Boxing doesn't need new gloves, they need to cast away the corrupt promoters, judges and commisioners first.
Doesnt even need that. Boxing just needs exposure. Fighters just need to fight. I mean look at Grant Adamek. PPV? Are you ****ing kidding? Few years ago that would have been on FNF. Fighters and promoters are taking the **** and milking the fans dry.
Interesting Idea... Let me first say that I love boxing the way it is and have for over 25 years, I have over the last few years been getting more and more into MMA and I now love both sports.. If boxing went to smaller gloves my guess is that a puncher could have an even longer career, although with smaller gloves is everyone now a knockout puncher??
I know we need a return to the old days with fights on ABC and USA Tuesday Night Fights.. That was awesome!!!

Boxing needs the best fighters to fight the best fighters. This entire year would be different if we were all looking forward to Mayweather vs Pacquaio in November - instead we have NOTHING to feel excited about. In MMA and the UFC specifically - the best fight the best or else they don't fight at all. Boxing has become it's own worst enemy.
People have been writing boxing's obituary for decades and it has not gone away yet nor will it ever go away. MMA fans just think of boxing in the U.S., but boxing is an international sport and it does very well all over the world. People talk **** about Toney, but he has probably made more money that the top 10 best UFC fighters have made in their entire careers. The problem with boxing is not corruption, but incompetance. Incompetant judges and refs. Plus state athletic commssions are a big problem. They know nothing of boxing and they usually consist of a bunch of political hack appointees. For example, a state athletic official is always supposed to be in the locker rm of the fighter to watch the wrapping of hands, etc. Now tell me who caught Margarito cheating? It was not the state official, he saw nothing wrong, it took the trainer to catch the plaster in the gloves. This shows that State commissions are full of ****. The dr's they appoint to be involved in the fights know nothing of the sport. The judges ages are sometimes in their 70's and cont to be boxings biggest problem. But boxing will not die, boxing has been around since ancient Greece and Pro prize fighting in now in its 3rd century. When asked people around the world who is the world's best known most recognized sports figure its not a basketball player, football player, or MMA fighter, its a boxer, Muhameed Ali. Boxng has Joe Luis, Sugar Ray Robinson, Jake Lamotta, Jack Johnson, Henry Armstrong, Marciano, Hagler, Holmes, Duran, Arguello, Frazier, Ali, Foreman, Dempsey, Holyfield, Chavez, Leonard, I can go on and on. These men are legendary and all known throughout the world. MMA does not even have one man that comes close to any of the fighters I just named nor will MMA ever come close. Tell me MMA fans who do you have that can be compared to any of the historical fighters i just named. If your sport is still around and doing well in 100 yrs then MMA fans can start comparing itself to boxing to some degree.
The real Mr David Haye has 33500 followers on twitter, comparably one of the biggest British MMA fighters Michael Bisping has less than half at 14000 followers.
Wtf does twitter have to do with anything? Anyway, I agree with Bonecrusher about boxing making a comeback to tv. That would be awesome for the sport :happy
I think It just needs a new star that can live up to the hype the way Ali and Leonard and Robinson did. If a mike tyson like heavyweight were to show up thats all anyone would talk about. now dont get me wrong, pacquaio fits the bill but here in America his starpower is limited, he does not speak good English and most of his career was in the smaller weight divisions (under lightweight) most dont care about. Americans sadly, are americentric why do you think Brock Lesnar is so popular? Boxing attracts fans more interested in technique, mma can more easily be viewed by the laymen. Think about it most of us understand many techniques used in mma competitors some more than others, but all of us reading these forums would be categorized as hardcore fans NOT casual fans. We are not the main buyers of ppvs we are a minority and casual fans are the targeted audience, thats why the ufc is able to con people into buying so many hype-jobs like the lesnar vs carwin fight as the best vs the best hw. See, a people want to see a guy throw looping punches with his chin exposed like Koschek or leben or maybe Liddel because it looks cool and joe rogan would say "look at those bombs hes throwing if on lands on ----- it's over" while larry merchant would point out the lack of technique like he did with mayorga fights. most american fans want to see a quick Ko or they want to see blood, maybe an arm break or sometimes see a guy get choked out unconscious . thats what mma is to the masses, and that is why it is so popular here in the us. I would also like to add the fact that when a fighter is at the height of popularity like Floyd, De la Hoya, Pacquaio these days they only fight a couple times a year so we have far less fights happening a year. It probably has to do with the ppv system. when a boxer becomes a ppv attraction they rarely can be viewed live on free tv because of all the money they can generate, and so they fight less often to build interest for the ppv event. Lets say Pac fought 5 or 6 times a year and Mayweather fought 5 or 6 times a year and Cotto did the same and mosley, and Pavlik, klitshkos, donaire, margarito, haye, marquez ect. the only way to have them all on ppv is to have them stacked in cards like the ufc model. Arum has a big ppv cards with all top rank fighters that are stacked with names Golden boy dose it, warren does it, King does it - sounds good to you? Probably sounds good to the promoters too, but boxers would hate it cause they would be getting paid UFC money = no good. Get them big named boxers back on network tv with big sponsorship Have the prospects on the undercards then we get more viewership here in the us.
