Langford would have been toying with the grossly over rated Ketchel. No doubt what so ever.

I read in Clay Moyle's book that Langford didnt go at Ketchel too hard as he had hoped to get a return match for Ketchel's middleweight world title.

I've also read quite a few accounts of the fight and many thought Ketchel won due mainly to inactivity by Langford.

Riser, I haven't read Clay book yet, although Leon and I recieved one copy each last year.. "To Leon, stop staring at my package, from Clay Moyle" is appropriately inscribe in Leon's copy... True.

IMO, Ketchel was nothing more than a foul tempered country lad with hard fists and a penchant for fighting. I seriously doubt he'd listen to anyone regarding training or technique, as he mostly travelled with his manager looking for fights. Hence I'd suggest Langford would have toyed with Ketchel.. Langford's ability is second to none of the era, including Johnson. His ability to brawl, box and take on much larger men comfortably smacks of brilliance.. Most Yanks will argue that Ketchell also took on the much larger Johnson- stiff ****ing ****, Johnson made him look stupid until Ketchel got lucky..lol. I doubt Johnson would have smothered Langford on his day...

What ya think of Clays book??

    Loved the book mate.

As far as Ketchel is concerned I do think he was a little overrated but still a definite great of the sport. Johnson absolutely had his way with Ketchel in the footage I've seen and apart from the lucky punch Ketchel was never in it.

Langford I think would have given Ketchel a beating had a title been on the line and we all know Johnson wanted nothing to do with Sam once he got his title.

Calling Ketchel "grossly overrated" is a huge stretch. Ketchel would be considered a Junior Middleweight by today's standards.

I call Ketchel 'grossly over rated', as that's what he is by the nutthuggers in todays world.

In fact, most white American fighters were extremerly limited in skill during that era. The following actions sum up the typical slice of action.. Throw a punch from 3 foot away.. Miss by two feet.. Take an extra step.. Clinch.. Wrestle a bit.. Be broken up by the ref... Do it all again. Ketchel??? Over rated.

People seem to all agree on the USA being the pinnacle of World boxing always. Well folks, take a long hard look at Australia.

Look at how average so-called Yank Champs were made to look by Darcy.

Look at the work of Jack Carroll... and people praise Barney Ross.

Look at Ron Richards.. IMO, he'd have taken Monzon but failed with SRR.

Look at Dave Sands.. He'd have taken SRR and failed with Monzon.

The list goes on and on.. (a bit like me)...

Ketchel may have been ok in America, but I doubt he'd have lasted too well in Australia Ippy.. Australia had already developed a skill... that skill being SCIENCE in the sport of BOXING.

Big call mate. I can see where you are coming from with the Darcy comparison and Sands definitely had a chance to become a great but I do think you're selling Ketchel short not to mention Barney Ross. I rate Carroll very highly but I'm not sure he was the equal of Ross.

Considering what Carroll was doing to our best M/W's, and what our best M/W's were doing to ther rest of the world at that point in time, I'd give Barney Ross NO CHANCE AT ALL against Carroll mate. Too big, too flashy and too active inside the ring. Ross' only chance would be to see Carroll Disq for back handing.

    Just my opinion.

The problem is your comparing "might have's" with "did's". As I said, it's a huge stretch.

Some interesting discussion regarding Langford & Ketchel guys.

Unfortunately I can't add anything of an 'informed' nature to what's already been written above.

As I told Flamengo, I'm just the cub reporter here and more informed input is always welcome.

....and your problem is being convinced the 'titles' were held by the best fighters in the World.

If our guys really were the best why didnt they attempt to get a title shot in the States ? I'm sure there would have been opportunitys for our guys over there just as guys like Johnson, Langford, Archie Moore etc fought over here.

Not having a dig at you mate just curious about your opinion. :good
