    Young Joseph
v Joe Fletcher - National Sporting Club, Covent Garden, London, UK.

The pair fought a draw over 20 x 3 minute rounds and both claimed the English 134 pound title.
They would meet 3 times in all, with all 3 bouts resulting in draws.

Young Joseph would go on to challenge Harry Lewis for the World welterweight title in 1910 (100 yrs ago) - being stopped in 7 rounds.

    Joe Fletcher
would meet and beat Jack Ward for the English 135 pound title, and next bout be involved in a no contest, when the referee deemed both boxers weren't trying!

    (35 years ago today)

Involved another of my all-time favourite fighters Tony Mundine, and unfortunately a loss:

    Tony Mundine
v James Marshall - Festival Hall, Brisbane, Queensland.

American Marshall won by KO in round 1 of 10. One of 3 first round KO losses Tony suffered in a long career.
This was Tony's 3rd deteat in a row. The only time in his long distinguished career that this occurred.
Marshall would score another handy win in his next start against Samoan/Kiwi Monty Betham, but largely because Betham broke a thumb and chose to be counted out rather than continue.

The bout was refereed by ATG Jack Dempsey.
Lou Ambers had been stripped of this title for his failure to meet Davey Day in a title fight.

Rocky Mattioli v Ricky Day - Festival Hall, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.

Scottish born Day inflicted Mattioli’s first defeat.
Day only had one loss in his 9 fight career, to the young and heading for the bigtime, Hec Thompson.
Mattioli by contrast, would go on to win Maurice Hope’s World light middleweight title 10 years after the Day fight.

IBO middleweight world champion Daniel ‘The Real Deal’ Geale ready to
defend his title against Anthony ‘The Man’ Mundine

    By Melissa Green

IBO middleweight world champion Daniel Geale (21-0-0 13KO) will challenge former world super middleweight champion Anthony Mundine (35-3-0 23KO) on 27th May 2009 at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre, Queensland. Ranked as the top two contenders in Australia and world top ten of their division, a win will advance the IBO champion to test his skills against other experienced world pugilists. WBA middleweight champion Felix Sturm and Arthur Abraham are worthy opponents that Geale and Mundine have mentioned for future fights.

This is an essential fight for two of our top boxers to establish who will move forward into the spotlight of ultimate fighting in a world of prestige boxing. IBO world champion Daniel ‘Real Deal’ Geale is a disciplined boxer with great boxing sense, using these skills to out box Australia’s best earning him respect and admiration along the way. Anthony ‘The Man’ Mundine enjoys a challenge and appreciates progressive opportunities to test his boxing skills at different levels of the fight game in boxing Australia. Mundine will need to dig deeper than in his previous fights to beat a strict and demanding Geale.

Geale and Mundine have gained recognition from various boxing organizations, competing against reputable boxers of similar ilk. In June 2008 Geale defeated Serbian Geard Ajectovic over twelve competitive rounds, successfully defending his IBO title. After Geale’s victorious win over New Zealand boxer Daniel McKinnon in December 2008, he delivered a solid first round knock out to Canadian Ian McKillop on March 11 2009. Conditioned and ready, Geale enters the ring confident his technique and boxing experience will shake Mundine’s ring dominance. Geale’s will to achieve a higher world ranking will see him use superior boxing skills in a powerful fight to retain his IBO title.

“I’m more ready now than ever, I’m hitting my peak both physically and mentally. I’m in a great position, I’m at the peak of my career and Mundine’s career is nearing the end. Everything is going great, I have no injuries and training hard every day”

Anthony ‘The Man’ Mundine is a man of many words, who backs up his pre fight hype with cultured boxing skill inside the ring. Winning thirty five composed fights since turning professional in March 2000 he has proved to boxing officials and fans he is a gifted boxer. Looking outside Australia for his next contest, Mundine is focused on gaining Geale’s title to move forward and challenge boxers at the same level of world boxing.

Mundine has had some set backs with his infected eye and hip mobility issues. He is confident that he still has the speed and skill to get in the ring and match it with a younger and determined Geale. Focused on getting the job done they have been training hard, pushing themselves physically and mentally. Win, lose or draw this will be Mundines last fight in Australia, he will be looking to fight a champion for a world title. Geale is confident he can win and talks about beating Mundine and boosting his boxing record. “I am young and hungry, this is my time” focused and keen to take on the mouth of boxing, Geale’s mind is set on a victory over his challenger and keeping his belt. With the support of his team at the Grange Old School Gym and trainer Graham Shaw it is sure to be a night of boxing excellence.

The Brisbane Entertainment Centre will be centre stage for one of Australia’s most powerful match ups of the year. Fighting on the undercard are heavyweights Alex Leapai (14-3-2 10KO) and début Sonni Bill Williams, hard hitting boxers who will punish the contender challenging them.

Pro debut of the great Roy Jones Jnr at the Civic Center, Pensacola, Florida, USA.

Admittedly he was robbed blind at the Seoul Olympics, but who would have forseen the string of world professional titles that would follow?
Sadly, Jones, like many before him should have retired earlier. Avoiding forgetable recent performances including those against Bernard Hopkins, and our own Danny Green.
