Benny Paret v Don Jordan - Las Vegas, Nevada, USA.

'Kid' Paret wins World welterweight title on PTS over 15 rounds.

Jordan loses a lot more than just his title. The now ex-champ was paid $2,000 for expenses only. He had signed over his $85,000 guarantee in order to void his contract with managers Don Nesseth and Jackie McCoy.

Jeff Fenech, born in Marrickville, boxer, boxing trainer, world champion, represented Australia at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics (and was duly ripped off!).

Here’s one about one of my all-time favourite fighters, Tony Mundine Snr:

Tony Mundine v Ray Wheatley - Manly Warringah Leagues Club, Sydney, Aust.

Mundine Snr won by KO in round 2 of 10, but not before Weatley, current day editor of Ray Wheatley’s ‘World of Boxing’ magazine, sat Tony on his butt in round 1.

Weatley would remain the only Australian fighter to have ever knocked Mundine down.

Billy Conn passed away from pneumonia at 75.

Conn, a natural light heavyweight, and a former world champion in that division had two cracks at the great Joe Louis' world heavyweight title. In their first bout in 1941 Conn fought perhaps the fight of his life, leading on points into the 13th round. However, Louis then capatalised on a Conn mistake and put him away.

Their second meeting in 1946 was an anti-climax with Louis dominating, and finishing Conn in the 8th round.

Jimmy McLarnin v Young Corbett III - Los Angeles, California, USA

McLarnin wins World welterweight title by first round KO, after Corbett had already been been floored twice. In the finish Corbett had his back to McLarnin, and the Irishman rushed across the ring and punched Corbett in the jaw. Referee George Blake stopped the contest with Corbett out on his feet.

Referee Blake commented later "it’s most spectacular upset the welterweight division has known in many years."

Corbett became the seventh welterweight champion in succession to lose the title whilst defending it for the first time.

Birth date of Canadian super middleweight Eric Lucas.

Lucas would win the WBC super middleweight title, lose it to Markus Beyer, and then lose to our own Danny Green for an interim version of it.

Eric Lucas, after 3 years out of it is now 2nd fight into a comeback.

....and fitting that it's about perhaps our greatest of all time, Lionel Rose, who is having a statue unveiled in his honour next week - see the relevant ESB thread for specific details.

Yoshiaki Numata (Japan) v Lionel Rose (Australia) – Hiroshima, Japan.

Numata defeated Rose on PTS over 15 rounds, retaining his WBC super featherweight title. Lionel retired following this bout. But 4 years attempted a rather ill-fated 6 fight comeback.

Vince Phillips v Kostya Tszyu - Trump Taj Mahal, Atlantic City, USA.

Phillips wins Tszyu’s IBF super lightweight title in a major upset by stoppage in round 10 of 12.

This was Kostya’s first defeat, and his only one until his career ending loss to Ricky Hatton in mid 2005.
