Mike Tyson v Pinklon Thomas - Las Vegas, Nevada, USA.

'Iron Mike' retains his WBC/WBA heavyweight titles by KO in round 6 of 15, inflicting only the second loss of Thomas' career.

Tony Tucker v James 'Buster' Douglas - Las Vegas, Nevada, USA.

The undefeated Tucker wins vacant IBF heavyweight title by KO in round 10 of 15. His 'zero' didn't last long though, beaten by Tyson in his very next outing.


*Both the above bouts were on the same card which also included in the undercard:
Page v Broad, and Tubbs v Halstead.

 

Imagine you're at a boxing night with 6 fight card to look forward to.

You queue up to buy the first round of drinks and by the time you get back half the fights have been completed, and before you've managed to finish your first beer it's time to go home!

A bunch of no names yes. But Slaughter did fight Zab Judah and Vernon Forrest, and you guessed it, he was KO’ed in the first round by both!

Birthdate of Aussie former world champion Barry 'Boy' Michael – happy 55th!

Hector Thompson (Australia) fought Roberto Duran for his WBA world lightweight title in Panama City.

Though stopped in the 8th round, Thompson put up a big showing and hurt Duran enough for him to credit Thompson years later as having hit him as hard as anyone ever has!

The unveiling of Lionel Rose's statue at Warragul, Victoria.

Lionel was born 21 June 1948, and raised at Jackson's Track near Warragul. He was bought up in hardship, and was taught to box by his father, Roy, a useful tent fighter. At 10, Rose struck up a friendship with newspaper photographer Graham Walsh, who further encouraged him and bought him his first pair of boxing gloves.

At about 15, Lionel came under the instruction of Warragul trainer Frank Oates, whose daughter Jenny he would later marry. Lionel won the Australian amateur flyweight title at age 15 and at 19, under Jack Rennie, had won the world bantamweight title from Japan's Fighting Harada.

Jenny will be with Lionel at the statue unveiling - nothing surer!

Just returned from the Lionel Rose statue unveiling ceremony.

A great occasion and Lionel & Jenny seemed to thoroughly enjoy it.

Amongst others present were:

Johnny Famechon, Barry Michael, Jeff Fenech, Robbie Peden, Sammy Soliman, Noel Kunde, Graeme Brooke, Dave Russell, Matt Ropis and many, many more.

Eric Morel (Puerto Rico) v Alberto Ontiveros (Mexico) - Madison, Wisconsin, USA.

Morel, who won this bout by UD over 12 rounds, would win the WBA World flyweight title from the previously unbeaten Sornpichai Kratingdaenggym, in his very next bout.

Morel’s first defence of the title would be his second fight against Ontiveros, and the result the same as their first meeting - ie PTS win to Morel.

Morel is still fighting and still winning titles. Ontiveros retired in 2005 after a string of losses.

Referee Zack Clayton become the first African-American to referee a World heavyweight title fight when he refereed the Ezzard Charles v Jersey Joe Walcott bout at Municipal Stadium, Philadelphia, USA.

Charles won the bout by UD over 15 rounds, retaining his World heavyweight crown.

Virgil Akins v Vince Martinez - Arena, Saint Louis, Missouri, USA.

The veteran Akins in his 66th fight won the vacant World welterweight title by TKO in round 4 of 15.

Martinez made 9 trips to the canvas in less than 4 rounds - 5 times in the Ist round, twice in the 3rd and twice again in the 4th.

Charkey Ramon v Donato Paduano - Hordern Pavilion, Sydney, New South Wales.

Ramon successfully defended his Commonwealth light middleweight title, stopping Canadian Paduano, in round 11 of 15.

 

Also the 3 knockdown rule has eliminated the old scenario of guys getting repeatedly knocked down, but still able to continue.

The Akin v Martinez bout (mentioned a couple of posts ago) would obviously have finished early in the Ist round under the 3 knockdown rule.

Barry McGuigan v Eusebio Pedroza - Loftus Road Stadium, Shepherd's Bush, London, UK.

McGuigan won Pedroza’s WBA World featherweight title by UD over 15 rounds, and in front of 26,000 fans.

Lennox Lewis v Mike Tyson - The Pyramid, Memphis, Tennessee, USA.

Lewis retains his World heavyweight title, stopping 'Iron Mike' in round 8 of 12.

This would be Lewis' second last fight. His last being a win against Vitali Klitschko a year later.
