James J. Braddock v Max Baer - Long Island, USA.

Braddock, well known to most as the ‘Cinderella Man,’ wins the World heavyweight title on PTS over 15 rounds.

Upset..............huge upset!

In fact enough of an upset to capture the public imagination and be the catalyst for a film and numerous books.

Miguel Cotto v Joshua Clottey - Madison Square Garden, New York, New York, USA.

Cotto retains his WBO welterweight title with a PTS win over 12 rounds.

Cotto more recently won Yuri Foreman’s WBA World light middleweight title, but must be extremely concerned now that Anthony Mundine has set his sights on him!

Max Baer v Primo Carnera - Madison Square Garden Bowl, Long Island City, Queens, NY, USA.

Baer wins World heavyweight title by KO in round 11 of 15, dropping the giant Carnera 11-times in the process.

Baer would lose the title a year later, in his first defence, to 'The Cinderella Man' James Braddock - see two posts back.

 

We both know Cotto would have little to no interest.

But it would be funny if he actually did - geez he'd be getting a rise out of the circus of opponent choices and weights.

Here we are 2 weeks from his next bout and they don't even know what weight they are fighting out, let alone who the tomato can in the other corner is going to be.....CIRCUS!

James J. Braddock v Corn Griffin - Madison Square Garden Bowl, Long Island City, Queens, NY, USA.

Both fighters down in the 2nd, and then "The Cinderella Man' Braddock stopped Griffin in round 3.

This fight was a preliminary on the Baer v Carnera card (see post #364).

A fight Braddock was extremely lucky to get due to a combination of injury and bad form, and an upset win that helped propel him towards his eventual showdown with Baer, and winning the world title.

 

The movie was entertaining, but you're right, the books are better. Have read a few, and will no doubt read them again.
